The Strokes have announced a new studio album, Reality Awaits, marking their first release in six years and setting up a major return for the New York band ahead of a busy global festival season. The album, confirmed via a short teaser video on April 6, is expected to arrive this summer.
The announcement has quickly gained traction online, driven by both the band’s long absence from full-length releases and the timing of their comeback. The Strokes are scheduled to perform at Coachella this weekend, before heading to major festivals including Bonnaroo, Outside Lands and Summer Sonic later this year — positioning the new record at the centre of their live resurgence.
The teaser itself offered little in the way of concrete details but leaned heavily into visual style. A retro clip featuring a 1980s Nissan 300ZX and the tagline “In the Flesh, it’s Even Sexier” hinted at a carefully constructed rollout, backed by a brief 13-second audio snippet. Reality Awaits will follow 2020’s The New Abnormal, which debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 and earned the band their first Grammy Award. That album marked a creative resurgence after a seven-year gap following 2013’s Comedown Machine, reintroducing the Strokes to a new generation of listeners while restoring critical acclaim.
A comeback shaped by gaps, side projects and live returns
The band’s return comes after a relatively quiet period. Between 2024 and 2025, the Strokes performed only a handful of shows, while frontman Julian Casablancas focused on his side project, the Voidz, releasing Like All Before You in 2024 and continuing studio work in New York.
At the same time, subtle tensions within the band have surfaced publicly. Guitarist Nick Valensi was notably absent from a recent San Francisco performance and is expected to miss additional shows, with musician Steve Schlitz stepping in as a temporary replacement. Casablancas has also hinted in recent interviews that communication within the band has become limited, adding a layer of uncertainty to the group’s internal dynamic.
Despite this, the Strokes’ ability to generate momentum remains intact. Few rock bands from their era continue to command this level of attention, particularly in a streaming-driven industry where legacy acts often struggle to remain culturally relevant. The combination of a long gap between albums, a visually intriguing teaser and a packed touring schedule has turned Reality Awaits into one of the most anticipated rock releases of the year.
The album also arrives at a moment when guitar-driven music is once again competing for space in a landscape dominated by pop and hip-hop. The Strokes’ last record showed they could evolve without losing identity — a balance that will likely define expectations for this new project.
