Todd Benzinger Dies at 63: Reds Champion Caught 1990 World Series Final Out

Todd Benzinger, the Cincinnati Reds first baseman who caught the final out of the 1990 World Series, has died at 63. Benzinger died on Wednesday, October 21. The announcement brought renewed attention to the catch that secured Cincinnati’s four-game sweep of the Oakland Athletics and gave him a lasting place in franchise history.

In their statement, the Reds said he would be remembered “with great affection and gratitude” and offered condolences to his family, friends and former teammates.

The catch that completed Cincinnati’s championship

For Reds supporters, Benzinger’s defining moment came in the ninth inning of Game 4 of the 1990 World Series. Cincinnati held a 2–1 lead over Oakland and needed one more out to finish the series.

Carney Lansford lifted a foul pop-up behind first base. Benzinger moved back, tracked the ball and caught it, raising his glove as the Reds became world champions.

As the Society for American Baseball Research recounts, Benzinger had also received the throw for the previous out. Moments later, he was holding the ball that ended the championship.

It was a particularly meaningful achievement for a player raised near Cincinnati. Born in Dayton, Kentucky, on February 11, 1963, Benzinger attended New Richmond High School in Ohio. He eventually won a World Series with the team he had supported growing up.

A baseball career followed by years of coaching

Boston selected Benzinger in the fourth round of the 1981 draft. His major-league debut came on June 21, 1987, against the New York Yankees. Entering as a pinch-hitter, he drew a walk before Ellis Burks hit a two-run home run that helped Boston win.

Benzinger joined Cincinnati before the 1989 season and played for the Reds through part of 1991. He later played for the Kansas City Royals, Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants.

Across nine major-league seasons, he recorded 733 hits, 66 home runs and 376 runs batted in, finishing with a .257 batting average, according to his official career profile.

His work after professional baseball extended beyond the diamond. Benzinger coached high school girls’ basketball in the Cincinnati area before managing the Dayton Dragons in 2009 and 2010.

He also continued attending Reds events, including Redsfest, fantasy camps and community programmes. Rick Walls, executive director of the Reds Hall of Fame and Museum, remembered his generosity with supporters and described him as “a tremendous friend” to the museum.

The Reds’ remembrance, carried by FOX19, highlighted his involvement in youth baseball and the time he devoted to mentoring young players.

The championship catch remains the most familiar image of Benzinger’s career. The tributes from Cincinnati also remember the years he spent returning to the community, meeting fans and helping the next generation play.
