United States — Mobile payment giant Venmo suffered a major outage on Wednesday, leaving users unable to send or receive money as reports surged into the tens of thousands within hours.
Venmo users across the United States continue to report intermittent payment failures, login issues, and app loading problems. Outage trackers still show elevated user complaints, suggesting service stability has not yet been fully restored for all customers.
Venmo has not issued an official statement explaining the cause of the disruption or confirming when full service will return. Users are advised to retry transactions later and monitor official channels for updates.
According to outage monitoring platform Downdetector, the first signs of trouble appeared at around 3:50 p.m. PT, when more than 4,000 users reported problems. The situation escalated rapidly:
Real-time outage tracking data was sourced from Downdetector’s Venmo status page, where user-submitted reports spiked rapidly.

User Anger Spills Onto Social Media
Frustrated customers quickly took to Reddit and X to vent their anger.
“I have my direct deposit in there. It should’ve arrived an hour ago. I’m unhappy.” — Reddit user
“Venmo fix your damn app! People have bills to pay.” — Post on X
“I’m closing my account after this. If you act like a bank, have my money when I need it.” — Reddit user
Several users reported being unable to reach customer support, with some saying phone lines were overwhelmed or stuck on automated systems.
What Caused the Outage?
Unlike past Venmo disruptions tied to cloud-service failures, early signs indicate this outage originated within Venmo’s own systems. The company has not issued a detailed explanation for the failure.
Venmo advised users to monitor updates via its official Help Center for account and service restoration news.
What To Do If You’re Affected
- Retry payments after a short wait
- Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data
- Update or reinstall the app
