Emergency warnings issued across multiple regions

Fire authorities issued emergency warnings for several locations as fire fronts intensified under hot, windy conditions. Areas north of Perth, including parts of Chittering and Bindoon, were among those placed on the highest alert, with residents warned that the situation posed a direct threat to life and property.

Further south, residents in Nambeelup — east of Mandurah — were urged to evacuate as fire behaviour became increasingly unpredictable. An evacuation centre was activated at the Murray Aquatic and Leisure Centre to support displaced residents. The alert level in the area was later reduced as conditions moderated.

In WA’s Mid West, large firefighting contingents were deployed to separate emergency-level blazes near Warradarge and Mogumber, with crews working around the clock to slow fire spread and protect nearby communities.

Warning website and app outage raises concerns

During one of the most critical phases of the crisis, the Emergency WA website and mobile app became unavailable for an extended period. This meant residents could not access updated fire maps, evacuation information, road closures, or official alerts at a time when multiple emergency warnings were active.

Emergency services later confirmed the outage was caused by technical issues and encouraged the public to rely on alternative information channels, including local ABC radio and the DFES information line, until services were restored.

Community leaders said the loss of real-time information added anxiety for residents already facing dangerous and fast-changing fire conditions, particularly in rural areas where evacuation timing can be critical.

Lightning, storms, and power outages complicate response

Fire officials believe several of the blazes were sparked by lightning associated with recent thunderstorms. Strong winds and dry vegetation allowed fires to spread rapidly, while additional storms brought damaging gusts to parts of the Wheatbelt, Central West, and Great Southern regions.

Widespread power outages affected tens of thousands of properties across Perth, the Mid West, and the Wheatbelt, placing extra strain on emergency operations. Telecommunications were also disrupted in some fire-affected areas, forcing crews to rely on backup systems.

Road closures and ongoing firefighting efforts

Major transport routes, including sections of Brand Highway, were closed as fires burned on both sides of the road. Firefighters continued strengthening containment lines around several blazes, with aerial support used where conditions allowed.

Authorities warned that while some fires had slowed or become stationary, many remained uncontained and could flare again if weather conditions worsened.
