World No Tobacco Day 31 May 2026 Theme: WHO Exposes The Hidden Appeal Behind Youth Nicotine Addiction

World No Tobacco Day 2026 will be observed globally on 31 May 2026 with the official theme “Unmasking the appeal – countering nicotine and tobacco addiction.” The campaign, led by the World Health Organization (WHO), focuses on exposing how tobacco and nicotine companies continue to attract young people through flavoured products, trendy packaging, influencer-style marketing and digital advertising.

WHO says the tobacco and nicotine industry is increasingly promoting products such as e-cigarettes, nicotine pouches and synthetic nicotine devices as modern alternatives while hiding their addictive nature. According to WHO data, at least 40 million adolescents aged 13–15 worldwide currently use tobacco products, while around 15 million adolescents already use e-cigarettes. In countries where data is available, teenagers are on average nine times more likely to vape than adults.

Why WHO chose this theme for 2026

The 2026 campaign highlights how companies use flavours, sleek product designs, colourful packaging and social media promotion to make harmful nicotine products appear harmless or fashionable. WHO has warned that these tactics are specifically designed to hook children and teenagers into long-term addiction.

Products marketed with candy-like flavours, stylish devices and “clean” branding often create the false impression that vaping or nicotine use is safer. WHO says these strategies risk reversing decades of global progress made against smoking and tobacco addiction.

Health risks linked to tobacco and nicotine products
