A fire at Broadway’s Eugene O’Neill Theatre brought a large FDNY response to Midtown Manhattan on Monday, May 4, after smoke was seen coming from the roof of the West 49th Street venue, best known as the home of The Book of Mormon.
The emergency unfolded late Monday morning in one of New York City’s busiest theater districts. Firefighters responded to the scene shortly before 10:30 a.m., and the situation was later raised to a 3-alarm fire as more crews were called in to help contain the blaze.
More than 60 FDNY units and close to 200 emergency personnel responded, according to initial reports. Ladder trucks were positioned outside the theater as crews worked from above, focusing much of their attention on the roof area where smoke and flames had been reported.
FDNY Crews Move Quickly as Broadway Block Is Shut Down
Images and video from the scene showed smoke rising above the Eugene O’Neill Theatre while firefighters extended ladders toward the roof. The response created a heavy emergency presence around West 49th Street, with fire trucks, police vehicles and first responders filling the block.
