French health officials have halted disembarkation from the cruise ship Ambition in Bordeaux after a sudden gastrointestinal illness outbreak left dozens of passengers and one crew member unwell during a 14-night voyage carrying mostly British and Irish travellers.
The Ambassador Cruise Line vessel arrived in the south-western French port on Tuesday, but passengers expecting to step ashore were instead told to remain onboard while local authorities reviewed the ship’s health records and arranged laboratory testing. The precautionary order affects more than 1,700 people, including 1,187 guests and 514 crew members.
French officials said the symptoms reported onboard were consistent with a gastroenteritis-type illness, with suspected norovirus among the possible causes. The outbreak has not yet been formally confirmed as norovirus, and samples collected from the vessel are being tested at Bordeaux University Hospital.
Ambassador Cruise Line said 48 passengers and one crew member were actively showing gastrointestinal symptoms as of Wednesday morning. Health authorities in Bordeaux also said several passengers had been isolated in their cabins as a containment measure while the wider ship remains under restrictions.
The Ambition began its journey from Belfast on May 8 before calling at Liverpool on May 9. According to the cruise operator, case numbers rose after guests boarded in Liverpool, though the source of the illness remains under investigation. The company has not suggested that any single passenger group, port, food item or onboard facility is responsible.
The outbreak has been further complicated by the death of a 92-year-old passenger onboard on Sunday. Ambassador Cruise Line said the guest had not reported symptoms linked to gastrointestinal illness before their death. The company added that the cause has not yet been established and will be determined through the appropriate coroner process.
In a statement, the operator said it was providing support to the passenger’s family and friends and was working closely with French shore authorities. It also said guest medical consultations linked to gastrointestinal illness were being offered free of charge while the ship remains under health review.

Public health officials are treating the situation cautiously because stomach viruses can spread rapidly in closed travel environments. French health teams boarded the ship after its arrival in Bordeaux and collected samples for testing. The results were expected to take at least several hours, leaving passengers in a holding pattern while authorities decided whether it was safe to allow disembarkation.

The regional health agency for Nouvelle-Aquitaine described the suspension of shore visits as a precaution because gastroenteritis-type infections are contagious. Officials also stated there was no reason to connect this incident with a separate hantavirus scare reported on another cruise ship.

For travellers, the restrictions mean missed time ashore in Bordeaux and uncertainty over the next stage of the voyage. However, health officials are likely to prioritise confirmation of test results, isolation of symptomatic passengers and evidence that cleaning measures are working before allowing normal movement to resume.
The incident is a reminder that cruise operators still face a difficult balance between passenger experience and public health control. Modern ships have stricter cleaning systems than in the past, but viruses that spread through close contact and contaminated surfaces remain hard to contain once they enter a busy vessel.
For now, the Ambition remains under the direction of French authorities. Passengers and crew will be allowed to leave only after clearance is granted, while the final cause of the outbreak and the separate passenger death remain under official review.
