A school community in Winchester has been left grieving after a teacher died following a medical emergency at Kingsā School during the GCSE exam period.
Emergency services were called to the school on Romsey Road on the morning of Thursday, May 14, after reports of a serious medical incident involving a female member of staff. Hampshire Police confirmed that officers attended alongside ambulance crews after being contacted by paramedics at 9.54am.
A woman in her 40s was pronounced dead at the scene. Police later confirmed that her next of kin had been informed and that the death is not being treated as suspicious. A file is now being prepared for the coroner.
The teacher has been identified locally as Mrs Bamford, who reportedly served as head of business and computing at the school. Tributes from students, parents and local residents have continued to grow outside the school gates, with flowers, candles and handwritten messages left in her memory.
The tragedy unfolded while Year 11 pupils were sitting GCSE exams. According to reports, the incident happened shortly after students arrived at school in the morning. The school briefly entered lockdown procedures before beginning what it described as a ācontrolled dismissal processā to safely send students home.
An email sent to parents explained that the school was dealing with āan urgent medical situation involving a member of staff.ā Parents were told that all pupils remained safe and supervised during the response.
Despite the disruption, Kingsā School confirmed that Year 11 exams would continue as scheduled. The school later announced it would remain closed again on Friday, May 15, as staff and students processed the devastating loss.
Air ambulance and emergency crews attended school
The incident prompted a major emergency response involving police, paramedics and the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance.
An air ambulance spokesperson confirmed that a helicopter carrying a doctor and two advanced paramedics was deployed to Winchester at 8.58am on Thursday morning.
Witnesses described seeing emergency vehicles outside the school while worried parents waited nearby for updates. Images from the scene later showed floral tributes building outside the entrance as the community came together in support of staff and students.
Official information about local emergency responses and public safety updates can be found through Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary.
Police have stressed there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death. While authorities continue standard procedures through the coronerās office, attention has largely shifted toward supporting the school community.
In a statement reported by local media, Kingsā School said its focus remained on supporting Mrs Bamfordās family, as well as pupils and staff affected by the tragedy. The school also requested privacy during what it described as an extremely difficult time.

Students and families leave emotional tributes
Many of the tributes left outside the school focused on Mrs Bamfordās kindness and the impact she had on students both inside and outside the classroom.
One message described her as a āwonderful teacherā who would āforever be remembered.ā Another student wrote that she was āsweet, kind, lovable and enjoyable,ā adding that she had changed many lives through her support and encouragement.
For many families, the sudden loss of a teacher during the school day has been deeply emotional. Teachers often become central figures in studentsā lives over several years, particularly during important exam periods where stress and pressure are already high.
Schools across the UK have increasingly focused on student wellbeing and crisis response planning following emergency incidents on campus. Lockdown procedures, safeguarding systems and controlled dismissals are designed to protect pupils while allowing emergency crews to respond quickly.
Recent school emergencies elsewhere have also highlighted how disruptive and traumatic such situations can become for students and parents. Swikblog recently covered another serious school safety incident involving a teacher attack that led to lockdown procedures.
At Kingsā School, however, the focus remains firmly on remembrance. A notice placed near the flowers outside the school thanked families and pupils for their tributes and confirmed that memorial items would be moved into a dedicated area of reflection within the school grounds.
As tributes continue to appear online and outside the campus, many former and current students have shared memories of Mrs Bamfordās patience, encouragement and positive energy in lessons. For those who knew her, the messages reflect not just the loss of a teacher, but the loss of someone who played a meaningful role in everyday school life.
