Billy Idol is having one of the biggest years of his five-decade career, and the 2026 American Music Awards added another historic moment to the legendary rocker’s resurgence.
The 70-year-old singer received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 52nd American Music Awards after already being named part of the 2026 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction class earlier this year. The recognition arrives during a major comeback period for Idol, who recently released his first studio album in nearly three years, Dream Into It.

The AMAs ceremony aired live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Memorial Day, May 25, with Queen Latifah hosting the event on CBS and Paramount+.
Online interest around Idol surged throughout the day as fans reacted to news of both the honor and his scheduled live performance. Google Trends showed a sharp spike in searches related to the singer ahead of the broadcast, with classic rock fans sharing clips and memories from across his career.
Billy Idol’s AMA performance becomes major talking point
While the Lifetime Achievement Award itself drew headlines, Idol’s planned performance became one of the biggest discussion points ahead of the show. AMA producers confirmed the rocker would perform a medley of some of his most iconic songs during the ceremony.
Known for hits including “White Wedding,” “Dancing with Myself,” “Rebel Yell” and “Eyes Without a Face,” Idol helped define the Second British Invasion in America during the 1980s after first gaining attention with punk band Generation X.
Executive producers Barry Adelman and Alexi Mazareas described Idol as “a true rock legend whose influence has transcended generations and genres,” according to the official AMAs announcement. The producers also praised his stage presence and lasting cultural impact.

Beyond the AMA recognition, 2026 has become a milestone year for Idol personally and professionally. The singer is celebrating the 50th anniversary of his career while also promoting the documentary Billy Idol Should Be Dead, which explores his life, struggles and survival through decades in the music industry.
The American Music Awards also highlighted several major performances and honors during the Memorial Day broadcast. Country-rock star Darius Rucker received the Veterans Voice Award presented by USAA for his long-running support of military communities and veterans.
