A Pennsylvania police officer’s decision to leave law enforcement for a spot on Love Island USA Season 8 has sparked criticism from local officials, who say the move comes at a time when the department is already struggling with staffing shortages.
Sean Reifel, 29, was unveiled as one of the original contestants on Peacock’s hit dating reality show ahead of its June 2 premiere. In promotional material released before the season launch, Reifel described himself as a police officer and spoke positively about the profession, calling it a job where he could make a difference in people’s lives.
According to local reports, Reifel joined the Bethlehem Police Department in Pennsylvania in August 2025 and officially left the force on May 20, 2026, just weeks before appearing on national television.
Officials Say Department Can’t Easily Replace Officers
His departure has drawn concern because Bethlehem Police is already dealing with 15 vacancies, a situation officials say can take months or even longer to address. Recruiting, hiring and training new officers is a lengthy process, leaving existing staff to absorb additional workloads.
Police Chief Michelle Kott said Reifel was a strong officer with significant potential but admitted she was disappointed by his decision.
“I love Sean, he’s a good guy, he was a great officer, but I’m disappointed,” Kott told local media. She noted that departments work hard to recruit qualified candidates and invest heavily in preparing them for public service careers.
Kott also warned that staffing shortages can increase overtime requirements and contribute to officer burnout, challenges already facing departments across the country.

Mayor Points to Taxpayer-Funded Training
Bethlehem Mayor J. William Reynolds expressed similar concerns. Reynolds, who personally swore Reifel into the department, said the city spent thousands of taxpayer dollars on police academy training and onboarding.
“We are disappointed he left as we now have another vacancy in our department that is impossible to fill until next year,” Reynolds said. He also remarked that he never expected to see a time when participation in a reality television show would take priority over serving as a police officer.
Despite their disappointment, city officials indicated that Reifel could potentially reapply to the department after his reality television experience concludes.
The Bethlehem Police Department is currently accepting applications for new officers through June 12 as it attempts to address ongoing staffing challenges.
Meanwhile, Reifel is set to appear when Love Island USA Season 8 premieres on Peacock. The situation has already generated discussion online about public service careers, taxpayer-funded training and the growing influence of reality television opportunities.
