Wanaka Fire Update: 22 Homes Evacuated in Albert Town
A large fire in Albert Town near Wānaka forced residents from about 22 homes on Saturday night as strong northwesterly winds pushed flames through scrub and trees close to residential properties.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand was alerted at 7:28pm on August 22, 2026. Firefighters from Wānaka, Luggate, Lake Hāwea, Cromwell and Tarras responded as crews worked from multiple points to contain the blaze.
Police assisted with evacuations and traffic control while firefighters operated around the Lagoon Avenue area. Despite dramatic flames being visible above nearby streets, authorities said there were no confirmed reports of houses burning in the updates available Saturday night.
Wanaka fire burns through difficult Albert Town terrain
The fire was burning across an area estimated at about 750 metres long, including gullies, steep hills, trees and scrub surrounded by residential homes.
That terrain made access difficult and forced crews to reposition as they tried to reach different sections of the fire. Strong northwesterly winds were also driving the flames and increasing the risk of embers moving beyond the main fire front.
The challenging conditions help explain why firefighters continued working even after the immediate threat to houses appeared to ease. Vegetation fires can leave hidden hotspots that flare again when wind reaches partially burned material.
A similar combination of flames near populated areas and precautionary evacuations was seen during a major Auckland fire that forced evacuations and road closures, highlighting why emergency crews often move residents before structures are directly affected.
About 22 homes evacuated as residents describe frightening scenes
Approximately 22 houses were evacuated as the Albert Town fire moved close to backyards and properties. Residents described seeing intense flames and glowing embers approaching homes, prompting some people to move vehicles and prepare to leave quickly.
Neighbours also checked on one another as the emergency developed, including helping residents who needed additional assistance. Images from the area showed firefighters tackling flames only metres from residential properties.
A police cordon around the Hunt, Lagoon and Sherwin streets area was used during the response, although one cordon was later lifted as conditions changed.
Large-scale precautionary evacuations have been used during other New Zealand emergencies as well. A Wellington coastal emergency that required hundreds of homes to evacuate similarly showed how authorities may clear vulnerable areas before conditions reach their most dangerous point.
Why wind and vegetation make this area vulnerable
The Albert Town fire occurred after residents reported little or no rain during the week, while Saturday had been comparatively warm for winter with increasing northwesterly winds.
Those conditions matter because dry vegetation can ignite and carry fire more readily, while wind supplies oxygen, pushes flames forward and transports embers into new areas.
The risk is not unique to this incident. Fire and Emergency research has previously identified northern Wānaka and Albert Town as an area with extreme wildfire risk, citing steep slopes, prevailing northwesterly winds, limited evacuation routes and highly flammable vegetation such as kānuka.

Firefighters expected to work through the night
Fire and Emergency District Assistant Commander Nic McQuillan said crews were working to dampen the fire and reach individual hotspots despite the difficult terrain.
Firefighters were expected to remain at the scene throughout Saturday night and into Sunday to extinguish remaining hotspots and respond quickly if parts of the fire reignited.
The cause of the blaze had not been established in the latest confirmed information. Authorities had also not announced when evacuated residents would be allowed to return home.

What residents need to know now
People around Albert Town should continue following instructions from police and Fire and Emergency personnel and avoid entering restricted areas while crews remain on site.
Keeping surrounding roads clear is important because fire appliances may need to move rapidly if wind direction changes or hotspots flare again. Residents who have been evacuated should wait for official clearance before returning to their properties.
As of the latest confirmed update, the key priorities were containing remaining fire activity, protecting nearby homes and making the affected area safe enough for evacuated households to return.
