NELSON, New Zealand — A man and a woman have been found dead after a shotgun was stolen from a Nelson store, setting off a major police response across Annesbrook, Tāhunanui and Stoke on Friday, September 4.
Police were first alerted shortly before noon to the theft of a shotgun from a business on Quarantine Road in Annesbrook. The person involved left in a vehicle before officers arrived.
A short time later, police were called to a firearms incident on Parkers Road. Officers found a man and a woman dead at the scene.
Initial inquiries indicate the two people knew each other. Police say the incident was isolated, there is no ongoing threat to the public and no one else is being sought.
Shotgun stolen before Parkers Road deaths
The first confirmed event happened on Quarantine Road, where police received information that a shotgun had been stolen from a store.
Nelson Mayor Nick Smith said the firearm had been taken from Hunting & Fishing before events moved to Parkers Road, where the deaths were discovered.
Staff at the Hunting & Fishing store acknowledged to local media that a firearm had been stolen but referred questions about the case to police.
Police said the person involved had already left in a vehicle before officers reached the store.

Police were then alerted to a firearms incident on Parkers Road. When officers arrived, they found a man and a woman dead.
Acting Tasman District Commander Superintendent Blair Macdonald said early inquiries suggested the pair knew each other. Police were providing support to their loved ones.
A property near the corner of Bullen Street and Parkers Road remained cordoned off as officers examined the scene.
Macdonald reassured residents that police considered the incident isolated and said there was no ongoing danger to the wider public.

Police scene also established in Stoke
The investigation extended beyond Quarantine Road and Parkers Road.
Police were also at a property on Sanctuary Drive in Stoke, where a scene guard was established. Authorities had not publicly explained the exact connection between that address and the other locations involved.
Around 10 police vehicles were reportedly seen near Parkers Road during the response, while officers appeared to be preparing a drone as the area was secured.
Police said nearby residents should expect an increased presence over the coming days as scene examinations and inquiries continue.
SH6 temporarily closed
The incident caused traffic disruption around Tāhunanui. State Highway 6/Tāhunanui Drive was closed between Parkers Road and Green Street while emergency services worked in the area.
The highway reopened on Friday afternoon, although police activity continued at the investigation scenes.
The incident happened close to Nelson Airport, but initial reporting indicated airport traffic was not significantly affected.
Hato Hone St John said one ambulance and one operations manager responded.

He expressed sympathy for the families of the deceased and thanked police and St John personnel for their response.
Nelson MP Rachel Boyack also described Friday as an extremely sad day for the community.
