The collision happened at about 12:15 a.m. on September 17 at the ALDI at 615 Gallatin Pike. The store was closed and empty, and no customers or employees were hurt. The driver was also reported uninjured and was later taken into police custody.
Semi-truck crashes through East Nashville ALDI
Metro Nashville Police and Nashville Fire crews responded after the tractor-trailer went through the front of the grocery store shortly after midnight.
Photos from the scene show extensive damage around the entrance, with the trailer lodged beneath the ALDI storefront. The position of the truck left part of the trailer elevated and created a complicated recovery operation for crews.
The truck was carrying groceries and regularly makes deliveries to the ALDI location, according to local reporting. That connection is now part of the circumstances investigators are examining as they reconstruct what happened before impact.
Surveillance video raises questions about intent
Surveillance footage has become a central part of the investigation. According to WSMV’s report on the East Nashville ALDI crash, police said video showed the truck entering the parking lot before crashing through the supermarket.
Investigators said the footage raised the possibility that the driver deliberately entered the building. Police later took the driver into custody.
However, authorities had not publicly established a motive or issued a final finding on intent in the initial reports. Police were also working to determine how fast the truck was traveling before it struck the store.
Empty store prevented a potentially worse outcome
The timing significantly reduced the danger. The crash happened while the ALDI was closed, meaning shoppers and employees were not moving through the entrance when the semi-truck came through the building.
During normal operating hours, the same area would typically contain customers, carts and staff. Despite the severe visible damage, no other injuries were reported.
Large commercial-vehicle crashes can require lengthy emergency operations even without serious injuries. The Coca-Cola truck crash involving a separated truck cab similarly showed how badly damaged heavy vehicles can complicate recovery efforts.

Crews unload groceries before truck removal
Workers began unloading groceries from the trailer before attempting to remove the vehicle from the storefront.
Reducing the cargo weight can make recovery easier while crews assess the damaged entrance and determine how to move the truck without causing further damage to the building.
The operation could continue beyond the initial police response because the entrance and surrounding structure will need to be evaluated before the supermarket can safely reopen.
Major crashes can also cause disruption long after the immediate danger has passed, as seen during the M42 crash near Redditch that required an extended emergency response.
Damage estimate and charges remain under scrutiny
Social-media summaries circulating Thursday identified the driver as Kristofer Scruggs, 34, and claimed damage to the building, truck and merchandise exceeded $250,000. They also cited a felony vandalism charge, a $35,000 bond and claims that the driver showed no signs of impairment or suicidal intent.
Those specific details were not established in the initial reliable local reporting reviewed Thursday and should not be treated as confirmed until supported by police, court or jail records directly connected to the case.
ALDI reopening timeline remains unclear
The Gallatin Pike store faces significant cleanup and repair work once the truck is removed. An immediate reopening time had not been announced in the early reports.
For East Nashville shoppers, the key practical question is how long structural inspections and repairs will take. For investigators, the focus remains on surveillance footage, the truck’s speed and evidence from the scene as police work to establish exactly why the semi-truck entered the store.
