Sway DaSafo was more than the voice behind “Little Derek” and “Level Up.” Born Derek Andrew Safo, the British-Ghanaian rapper built his name without waiting for the music industry’s permission—and behind that public success was a father of four whose family and Ghanaian identity remained central to his life.

News of Sway’s death at 44 emerged on September 17, 2026. A close friend told The Guardian that he died at his home in Ghana. No cause of death had been announced at the time of publication, and reports mentioning recent health difficulties do not establish how he died.

The detail that has made the loss especially painful for those close to him is that Sway leaves behind four children. His friend Kream said the pair had recently supported one another through health problems and the demands of parenthood, “especially as fathers and staying strong for our kids.”

The numbers tell only part of that story. Official Charts records three UK Top 40 singles for Sway: “Little Derek” reached No. 38, “Still Speedin’” climbed to No. 19, and “Level Up” became his biggest hit at No. 8.

For listeners, Sway’s more meaningful worth may be measured in what he changed. He proved an unsigned British rapper could defeat global stars at a major awards show, turn an independent album into a Mercury-nominated work and create a path for artists who followed. For his children, however, the public milestones sit beside a far more private loss: the absence of the father who, friends said, was trying to remain strong for them.
