LIVERPOOL, England â Three men have been taken to hospital following a stabbing in Liverpool city centre, with police searching for the person responsible after an altercation near G Bar in the early hours of Sunday.
Merseyside Police said officers were called to Tithebarn Street at around 6.35am on Sunday, September 20, after reports that three men had been injured.
The force believes the incident happened close to G Bar on Eberle Street, a well-known LGBT venue in Liverpool’s city centre nightlife district.
All three men were taken to hospital for treatment. Police said two were in a stable condition, while the third had suffered injuries described as minor.
No arrests had been announced in the initial police update, and detectives are now working to establish exactly what happened in the moments leading up to the stabbing.
Suspected weapon recovered as police search for offender
Detective Chief Inspector Lisa McNaughton said investigators believe an altercation took place near G Bar before the three men were injured.
âWe understand the concern that such a serious incident will cause in the community,â McNaughton said.
She urged anyone who witnessed the confrontation, or who may have recorded part of it, to contact police as a matter of urgency.
A suspected weapon has been recovered and will undergo forensic examination as detectives continue their investigation.
That examination could help investigators establish whether the recovered item was used during the attack and potentially provide forensic evidence relevant to identifying the person responsible.
McNaughton said officers would continue supporting the victims while pursuing the attacker.
âThe consequences of this incident could have been even worse, so be assured that we will relentlessly pursue the offender,â she said.
Police said an increased officer presence would be visible in the area while enquiries continue, with members of the public encouraged to approach officers if they have information or concerns.
Detectives are expected to examine CCTV from businesses, venues and streets around Eberle Street and Tithebarn Street, alongside any mobile phone footage recorded by people who were in the city centre at the time.
No hate crime motive established
While the incident occurred close to an LGBT venue, police have not said that the victims were targeted because of their sexual orientation and have not publicly described the attack as a hate crime.
At this stage, investigators have only said that some form of altercation appears to have taken place before the three men sustained their injuries.
The distinction is important while detectives work to determine the circumstances and motive behind the violence.
The location is part of Liverpool’s busy city-centre nightlife area, where bars and clubs can remain active into the early morning hours during the weekend.
Tithebarn Street was also included in a temporary dispersal zone introduced by Merseyside Police on September 13 following reports of anti-social behaviour in Liverpool city centre. That order expired the following morning, and police have made no connection between that operation and Sunday’s stabbing.
