Olivia Rodrigo dress unravels

Olivia Rodrigo’s Dress Unravels in the Rain During ‘The Cure’ at Tour Opener

Olivia Rodrigo’s new tour had a visual reveal waiting near the end of its first night. As she performed “the cure” in Hartford on Friday, September 25, water fell onto her white dress. The outer layer appeared to break away, exposing a vivid red outfit beneath it.

Clips of the moment spread online soon after the show at PeoplesBank Arena. Rodrigo has not explained how the costume effect works, but its placement during “the cure” connects it to the song’s recurring image of coming undone. It should not be described as a wardrobe malfunction.

The moment also gave the tour’s name, The Unraveled Tour, a physical form. In the official video for “the cure,” Rodrigo moves through a handmade hospital while searching for an antidote to heartbreak. The Hartford performance carried that uneasy imagery onto the stage, ending with a red look against the remains of the white dress.

The meaning behind the reveal

Rodrigo has spoken about why “the cure” matters to her. In an interview with Pitchfork, she described how a close relationship can expose insecurities rather than make them disappear. “It really shines a mirror on yourself,” she said of the song.

That idea helps explain why the costume reveal landed during this track. It was more than an outfit change: the white layer coming apart echoed the emotional unraveling at the heart of the music. Rodrigo has not publicly confirmed that interpretation of the staging, however, or disclosed who designed the costume.

“The cure” was one of 12 songs from Rodrigo’s third album, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, recorded on the fan-maintained opening-night setlist. She opened with “drop dead” and brought older hits including “good 4 u,” “vampire” and “drivers license” into the show.

A first night with a few surprises

The setlist places “the cure” just before a three-song encore of “deja vu,” “all-american bitch” and “expectations.” It also records Rodrigo singing “Happy Birthday to You” to her mother during the concert, a personal moment amid the larger production.

Hartford gets another show on Saturday, September 26, with Wolf Alice again opening. The arena confirmed the two opening dates, while Rodrigo’s label lists Pittsburgh as the tour’s next stop on September 29 and 30.

Whether the rain-soaked reveal appears in exactly the same form on subsequent nights remains to be seen. For the opening crowd, it was the point where the album’s central image became the show’s most talked-about scene.
