ODU Campus Death: One Person Dies at Batten Arts & Letters, Classes Canceled After Urgent Alert

NORFOLK, Virginia, October 21, 2026 — One person died Wednesday morning following an incident at Old Dominion University’s Batten Arts & Letters building, prompting an urgent campus alert, a large emergency response and the cancellation of classes inside the academic facility.

University officials confirmed the death but did not immediately disclose the person’s identity or cause of death. ODU said there was never a threat to the broader campus and that other university operations would continue as scheduled.

The building was closed for the remainder of Wednesday, leaving students and faculty with disrupted classes and unanswered questions about the incident.

ODU Emergency Alert: October 21 Timeline

At approximately 9:25 a.m. EDT, Old Dominion University issued an urgent alert notifying the campus community about a significant first-responder presence at Batten Arts & Letters, commonly known as BAL.

At 10:11 a.m., the university issued another update confirming that one person had died.

Officials instructed students, employees and visitors to avoid the building and surrounding area while emergency personnel responded.

Although the emergency response prompted concern, ODU later clarified that there was no ongoing campus safety threat.

Batten Arts & Letters Building Closed, Classes Canceled

All classes and university operations scheduled inside BAL were canceled for Wednesday, October 21.

The closure did not extend to the entire university. Classes, administrative services and other campus activities outside the affected building were expected to continue normally.

The Batten Arts & Letters building serves ODU’s College of Arts and Letters, making the closure particularly relevant to students and faculty who regularly attend classes or work inside the facility.

Students with scheduled activities in BAL should check university email and contact their instructors for information about assignments, appointments or rescheduled classes.

No specific reopening time beyond Wednesday’s closure had been confirmed in the initial reports.

University Confirms No Threat to Wider Campus

ODU officials emphasized that the fatal incident did not create a danger for the broader university community.

The university expressed sympathy for those affected and asked people to respect their privacy.

Officials have not described the incident as a shooting, criminal attack or other specific emergency. The presence of police and medical responders does not establish how the death occurred.

Students and families can monitor the official ODU emergency alert page for university safety announcements and operational updates.

Identity and Cause of Death Remain Unconfirmed

As of the university’s initial October 21 announcements, officials had not publicly identified the deceased person or confirmed whether they were a student, employee or visitor.

Local television station WAVY reported contacting ODU to determine whether the person was a student, but no confirmation was included in its published report.

The cause and manner of death also remained undisclosed.

The circumstances should not be confused with separate university emergencies, including the shooting incident near California State University, Northridge. No connection between the cases has been reported.

ODU Counseling Services and 24-Hour Support

Following the death, Old Dominion University made counseling and emotional support available to students, faculty and staff.

Students can visit the Office of Counseling Services in Suite 2403, Student Recreation and Well-Being Center, 4700 Powhatan Avenue.

Walk-in counseling is also available at Andrew Hall, 712 Fairfax Avenue, Suite 274, on the medical campus.

Students seeking telephone or telehealth support can call 757-683-4401. For urgent crisis assistance, callers can select option 2, available 24 hours a day.

A reflection gathering was scheduled for 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday in the Potomac and York River Rooms at Webb Student Center, with counselors and support professionals present.

Information for ODU Students and Families

Students should understand that Wednesday’s class cancellations applied specifically to Batten Arts & Letters, not the entire Norfolk campus.

Those affected by the closure should monitor university communications for information about returning to the building and resuming normal activities.

Campus emergency alerts can involve different circumstances. The separate Towson University shelter-in-place incident, for example, involved different safety concerns and should not be interpreted as evidence about the ODU death.

The most significant unanswered questions remain the deceased person’s identity, the circumstances surrounding the death and when BAL will reopen.

ODU has asked the community to respect the privacy of those involved while university officials provide any further confirmed information.
