Notorious serial killer Allan Legere, whose reign of terror in Miramichi in 1989 shocked Canada, has passed away at the age of 78. He died while incarcerated at the Edmonton Institution, Correctional Service Canada confirmed.
Legere gained infamy for his escape from prison in May 1989, after which he killed four more victims during his 201 days on the run. His notorious crimes earned him the title “Monster of the Miramichi.” His death, the cause of which remains undisclosed, is being reviewed by authorities.
A Serial Killer’s Reign of Terror
Legere, initially imprisoned for the 1986 murder of John Glendenning, escaped while being transferred for medical treatment. His time as a fugitive was marked by brutal murders across the Miramichi region, including the killing of 75-year-old Annie Flam, followed by the murders of two sisters and a Catholic priest.
Captured in November 1989, Legere was convicted of four counts of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison. He was denied parole multiple times, most recently in late 2025, with the Parole Board ruling he posed a “grave risk to society.”
Reflecting on Legere’s Infamous Legacy
Andre Veniot, a journalist who covered Legere’s case extensively, shared his thoughts on the killer’s death, recalling the terror the fugitive instilled in the community. Veniot co-authored two books about Legere’s reign of terror and described the emotional toll the case took on those who reported on it.
While the exact cause of Legere’s death remains unclear, the Correctional Service Canada has stated that an investigation is underway. Both the police and the coroner have been notified.
