Montana, whose legal name is Analicia Chaves, was arrested Monday in Mecklenburg County. She faces two felony counts of obtaining a controlled substance by fraud or forgery and two misdemeanor counts of simple possession of a Schedule IV controlled substance.
Chaves was held on a $20,000 bond in connection with the felony charges. The case centers on alprazolam, the generic form of Xanax, allegedly obtained from a Walgreens pharmacy.
Alprazolam prescriptions at center of North Carolina case
According to the reported arrest warrant, authorities allege that Chaves obtained alprazolam using prescriptions connected to a doctor’s allegedly fraudulent or stolen DEA registration and medical-provider identification.
The alleged activity dates back to February 21, 2026. Chaves’ warrant was reportedly issued on September 22, six days before her September 28 arrest.
Alprazolam is specifically classified as a Schedule IV controlled substance under North Carolina law.
The charges are allegations and do not establish guilt. Further court proceedings will determine what evidence prosecutors have concerning the prescriptions and Chaves’ alleged role.
Ana Montana’s lawyer challenges key interpretation
Chaves’ attorney has provided an important clarification about who allegedly used the questionable medical credentials.
According to the lawyer, the charges allege that a doctor used a fraudulent DEA registration and NPI number to prescribe alprazolam to Chaves. The attorney says Chaves then took the prescription written for her and filled it at a pharmacy.
The lawyer also said the misdemeanor possession counts appear to concern the same alprazolam she obtained through those prescriptions.
That distinction matters because the defense does not accept the characterization that Chaves personally stole or fraudulently used a doctor’s credentials.
The initial information also does not establish what Chaves allegedly knew about the DEA registration or NPI credentials when the prescriptions were filled.

Ana Montana and LaMelo Ball welcomed son LaOne in January
Ana Montana is the professional name of Analicia Chaves, a model and social-media personality who has been publicly linked with Ball for several years.
The couple welcomed their son, LaOne, in January 2026 and publicly revealed his birth around Mother’s Day in May.
Chaves has also publicly discussed fertility and plans connected with a fertility-focused nonprofit, adding another public-facing project to a year that had largely focused on motherhood and family life.
LaMelo Ball not accused in prescription case
Ball has not been accused of wrongdoing in connection with the alleged prescription activity. The initial reporting also included no public comment from him about Chaves’ arrest.
The legal development comes during a major career transition for Ball. He was traded from the Charlotte Hornets to the Minnesota Timberwolves in June 2026 and is preparing for his first regular season with Minnesota.
The case follows other recent legal developments involving basketball figures, including J.R. Smith’s arrest in Texas. Separate off-court developments involving former NBA stars have included Lamar Odom’s recent health and rehabilitation update.
Key questions remain as criminal case moves forward
Several details remain unresolved, including how the allegedly fraudulent DEA registration and NPI information were used, whether prosecutors contend Chaves knew the credentials were improper, and whether the two felony counts relate to separate prescriptions or transactions.
Those questions could become central as the case progresses because the defense account draws a distinction between knowingly participating in prescription fraud and filling a prescription provided by a doctor.
For now, Chaves faces four reported criminal counts â two felonies and two misdemeanors. The charges remain allegations and will be subject to the North Carolina court process.
