Black Panther 3 Casts David Jonsson as New Black Panther for 2028

Marvel Studios has officially cast David Jonsson as the new Black Panther in “Black Panther 3,” scheduled to open exclusively in theaters on December 15, 2028. The British actor will portray the adult son of T’Challa and Nakia rather than a recast version of the character played by Chadwick Boseman.

Director Ryan Coogler announced Jonsson’s role during Marvel Studios’ Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con on July 25, 2026. Letitia Wright and Winston Duke joined Jonsson, Coogler and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige onstage for the reveal.

Who does David Jonsson play in Black Panther 3?

Jonsson will play the grown-up Prince T’Challa, who first appeared as a child during the closing scene of 2022’s “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” Nakia, portrayed by Lupita Nyong’o, had raised the boy in Haiti under the name Toussaint.

When Nakia introduced him to Shuri, the child revealed that his Wakandan name was T’Challa, chosen in honor of his late father. The casting allows the franchise to continue the royal family’s story without rewriting the original king’s history.

Coogler has described the sequel as a coming-of-age chapter for the prince. It is not yet known how the character reaches adulthood, whether the story involves a significant time jump or what events lead him to assume the Black Panther mantle.

What happens to Shuri and M’Baku?

Letitia Wright will return as Shuri, who recreated the heart-shaped herb and became Black Panther in “Wakanda Forever.” She will first appear in Avengers: Doomsday alongside Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom, allowing her MCU storyline to develop before the next Wakanda film.

It remains unclear whether Shuri will retain the mantle, pass it to her nephew or serve alongside him. Her confirmed involvement suggests that the transition could be shown within the sequel instead of taking place entirely offscreen.

Winston Duke is returning as M’Baku. He appeared at the ceremonial challenge associated with Wakanda’s throne at the end of the previous movie, although his political position in the kingdom has not been formally explained.

Michael B. Jordan responds to the casting

Michael B. Jordan, who portrayed Erik Killmonger in the first two films, welcomed Jonsson’s selection while attending the premiere connected with Spider-Man: Brand New Day and its confirmed Marvel characters. Jordan called the casting “amazing” and expressed enthusiasm about the franchise’s next chapter.

His comments are the most notable update since the Comic-Con presentation. Jordan has not been announced as part of “Black Panther 3,” and there is no verified information about another Killmonger appearance.

Denzel Washington’s Black Panther 3 role

Denzel Washington is connected to an undisclosed character developed specifically for him by Coogler. Washington previously revealed that he expected to appear in the film, but no character name or story details have been released.

The actor has a personal connection to the franchise’s history. He helped finance an acting program attended by Boseman, who later credited Washington’s support with making that educational opportunity possible.

Online theories suggesting Washington could portray a Wakandan elder, mentor or villain remain speculation. His character’s loyalties and relationship with Prince T’Challa are still unknown.

Jonsson is a London-born actor known for playing Gus Sackey in the financial drama “Industry.” His other credits include “Rye Lane,” “Wasteman,” “The Long Walk” and the role of the synthetic Andy in “Alien: Romulus.”

Addressing the Comic-Con audience, Jonsson thanked Coogler, Feige and the returning cast. He avoided revealing plot details, saying he wanted his eventual performance to show what he would bring to the role.

Ryan Coogler returns to Wakanda

Coogler directed 2018’s “Black Panther,” which earned approximately $1.3 billion worldwide and became the first superhero movie nominated for the Academy Award for best picture. It won Oscars for costume design, production design and original score.

“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” followed in 2022 and collected about $859 million globally. Its storyline was reshaped after Boseman’s death in 2020, moving the focus to Shuri while establishing the younger T’Challa as a possible future successor.

The third installment is being prepared for a 70mm large-format presentation. A filming schedule and further technical details have not been published.
