Blue Origin is rebuilding its New Glenn launch site after the heavy-lift rocket exploded during a ground test at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida on May 28, 2026. No injuries were reported, but the vehicle was lost and important launch-pad equipment was damaged.
Latest update: Blue Origin says its investigation remains active, with early analysis pointing to the aft section of New Glenn’s first stage. Debris removal has finished, reconstruction has started and the company is targeting a return to flight before the end of 2026.
The explosion happened at approximately 9 p.m. during an integrated launch vehicle hot-fire test at Launch Complex 36. This procedure involves igniting a rocket’s engines while the vehicle remains secured to the ground, allowing engineers to assess propulsion and support systems before launch.
A large fireball appeared shortly after the test began. Blue Origin described the event as a significant anomaly and confirmed that all personnel were accounted for and safe.
The U.S. Space Force said emergency crews responded while the wider Eastern Range remained operational. Launches from other Cape Canaveral complexes were able to continue because the incident was confined to the Blue Origin facility.
What caused the New Glenn explosion?
Blue Origin had not announced a final cause as of August 1. In its June 30 recovery update, the company said preliminary evidence pointed to the rear section of the first stage, where major propulsion hardware is installed.
Investigators are reviewing information collected by sensors on the rocket and cameras positioned around the pad. The company has not confirmed whether an engine, fuel system, structural component or piece of ground equipment initiated the failure.
Any claim identifying a specific cause therefore remains unverified until Blue Origin completes its technical investigation.
How badly was Launch Complex 36 damaged?
The blast destroyed a lightning-protection tower, the transporter-erector used to move and raise the rocket, and its hydraulic cylinders. Blue Origin said the tank farm, integration facility, vehicle access tower and water tower remained in good condition.
Hardware recovery and debris removal are complete, while major repairs are underway. Instead of building an identical replacement for the transporter-erector, the company plans to adopt a hybrid operating method.
New Glenn’s stages will be connected horizontally before a crane raises the assembled vehicle and places it on the launch pedestal. Blue Origin had already been developing this approach for a future version of the rocket.
When will New Glenn launch again?
Blue Origin CEO Dave Limp says the company intends to return New Glenn to flight before the end of 2026. No confirmed launch date has been announced.
The timetable depends on identifying the cause, completing corrective work, repairing the pad and passing the required safety checks. Production of additional vehicles is continuing while reconstruction takes place in Florida.
Before the accident, Blue Origin had demonstrated progress through its New Glenn satellite launch and booster landing. The May test failure interrupted preparations for the rocket’s next commercial mission.
NASA adds a separate testing location
On July 24, NASA confirmed an agreement with Blue Origin to conduct New Glenn second-stage hot-fire testing at Stennis Space Center near Bay St. Louis, Mississippi.
Testing at the historic B-2 stand is expected to begin in autumn 2026. The facility previously supported Saturn V stages and NASA’s Space Launch System.
The Stennis agreement does not replace Launch Complex 36 because New Glenn missions will still depart from Florida. It gives Blue Origin another location for upper-stage testing while repairs continue at the launch site.
The program is central to Jeff Bezos’ effort to compete for commercial launches and NASA lunar work. That competition forms part of the wider Musk-Bezos race to support future Moon missions, where dependable heavy-lift rockets will be essential.
What happens next?
New Glenn is a roughly 98-metre orbital rocket designed to carry commercial satellites, government payloads and lunar spacecraft. It is separate from New Shepard, Blue Origin’s smaller vehicle used for short suborbital passenger flights.
Engineers must establish the failure sequence, correct the affected system and verify that the reconstructed pad is safe. Until those steps are complete, the proposed end-of-year return remains a target rather than a guaranteed launch schedule.
