British Columbia Ends Time Changes as B.C. Adopts Permanent Daylight Time Starting March 8

British Columbia is ending seasonal clock changes, with Premier David Eby announcing that Sunday, March 8 will be the final time residents “spring forward.” After that, the province will stay on daylight time year-round, closing the chapter on the twice-annual routine of shifting clocks ahead and back.

Key dates: March 8, 2026 is the last time change. On Nov. 1, 2026, clocks would normally go back one hour — but they won’t under the new plan.

March 8 is the last clock change in B.C.

The B.C. government says this weekend’s change will be the last time British Columbians adjust their clocks. Eby said the province is “done waiting,” and that B.C. will change the clocks once more and then keep the same time permanently.

B.C. will adopt year-round daylight time

Under the new policy, the province will permanently adopt daylight time, meaning the usual fall shift will be skipped later this year. Residents will have about eight months to prepare for Nov. 1, 2026 — the day clocks would typically be turned back — but will now remain unchanged.

The new name: Pacific Time

The province says the new year-round time zone will be called Pacific Time, reflecting a single, consistent clock throughout the year rather than toggling between seasonal settings.

Public support and health concerns shaped the move

A 2019 report prepared for the B.C. government found that 93% of respondents preferred year-round daylight time. Among people who supported permanent daylight time, three-quarters cited health and wellness concerns as their main reason.

Why the province says it matters

Eby said the time shift creates “all types of problems,” pointing to everyday disruptions and broader safety concerns — including pets waking up at the wrong time, children and parents losing sleep, and an increase in car accidents linked to the clock change.
