Brodie Kostecki Sends Tasmania Warning as Supercars Title Battle Tightens

The 2026 Repco Supercars Championship tightened again on Friday after Brodie Kostecki delivered the fastest lap in final practice at the Tyrepower Tasmania Super 440, sending a strong message to championship leader Broc Feeney ahead of a critical race weekend at Symmons Plains Raceway.

Kostecki, driving for Dick Johnson Racing, clocked a 50.948-second lap late in Practice 2 to narrowly edge reigning Bathurst 1000 winner Matt Payne by just 0.010 seconds. PremiAir Racing rookie Jayden Ojeda finished another 0.037 seconds back in third in one of the closest practice sessions of the season so far.

The Tasmania round arrives with the championship battle becoming increasingly tense after four rounds. Feeney leads Kostecki by only 23 points, while Payne sits 46 points behind the leader in third place. The standings shifted dramatically after Kostecki’s controversial clash with Chaz Mostert during the Christchurch finale earlier this season.

According to the official Supercars Tasmania Super 440 coverage, the weekend includes two 120km sprint races on Saturday followed by a 200km feature race on Sunday, creating major opportunities for drivers to gain or lose valuable championship points.

Kostecki rebounds after Friday pressure

The strong finish in practice came despite Kostecki also facing scrutiny earlier in the day. Supercars officials placed the championship contender under investigation for allegedly impeding Jackson Walls during Race 14 qualifying activity, adding extra pressure to an already important weekend.

Still, Kostecki’s speed across Friday suggested his Ford Mustang package is highly competitive around the tight Symmons Plains circuit, which is known for heavy braking zones and limited overtaking opportunities. A strong qualifying result could become crucial given how difficult track position can be to recover during Tasmania races.

Friday’s sessions also highlighted the growing challenge from multiple manufacturers. Team 18’s David Reynolds put Chevrolet on top in the opening practice session before Kostecki responded later in the afternoon. Meanwhile, Toyota continued showing pace after Chaz Mostert and Andre Heimgartner split poles for Saturday’s sprint races.
