Brooklyn House Fire Kills 6, Injures 7 in Sunset Park

BROOKLYN, New York, November 5, 2026 — Six people were killed and seven others injured when a three-alarm fire swept through a two-story row house in Brooklyn’s Sunset Park neighborhood early Thursday morning. The blaze broke out shortly before 1:40 a.m. on 58th Street, sending flames through the residential property and into an adjoining building as more than 230 firefighters and emergency medical personnel rushed to the scene.

Four people were found dead inside the building, while two others were taken to hospital in critical condition and later died. Among the seven injured were three New York City firefighters who suffered minor injuries, according to the FDNY.

Investigators also discovered a lithium-ion battery at the scene, prompting a hazardous materials response. However, authorities have not determined whether the battery was involved in starting the fire.

Brooklyn Fire: Six Killed as Flames Spread Through Sunset Park Home

The New York City Fire Department received the first emergency call at approximately 1:39 a.m. Thursday, reporting a fire at a residential property on 58th Street in Sunset Park.

Firefighters arrived to find heavy flames spreading through the two-story row house. The fire quickly extended into an adjoining building, forcing emergency crews to intensify their response.

According to FDNY information reported by PEOPLE, the fire escalated to a second alarm at 1:46 a.m. and a third alarm at 2:10 a.m.

A total of 74 emergency units and 231 firefighters and EMS personnel responded as crews worked to contain the flames and search the damaged building.

Firefighters continued battling the blaze for nearly three hours before bringing it under control at approximately 4:28 a.m.

Images and footage from the scene showed extensive damage to the property, with firefighters using aerial ladders and directing water into the building.

The Associated Press reported that four victims were pronounced dead at the scene, while two others died after being transported to hospital.

Seven Injured, Including Three FDNY Firefighters

Seven people survived with injuries following the deadly Brooklyn fire.

One civilian suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries, while three other civilians sustained minor injuries. Three firefighters were also treated for minor injuries sustained during the emergency response.

The identities and ages of the six people killed had not been publicly released in the initial FDNY reports.

The New York City Department of Buildings was notified following the fire, while the American Red Cross began assisting residents displaced from the affected properties.

According to PEOPLE’s November 5 report, the Red Cross was helping those left without housing find temporary accommodation.

Lithium-Ion Battery Found as FDNY Investigates Cause

Fire marshals are investigating what caused the three-alarm blaze. A lithium-ion battery was discovered at the scene, and a specialized hazardous materials team was requested to assess its presence.

Authorities have not confirmed that the battery sparked the fire or contributed to its spread.

The discovery comes amid growing concerns about lithium-ion battery fires across New York City, particularly those involving rechargeable batteries used in electric bicycles and scooters.

In an October 30 safety warning, the FDNY Foundation reported that lithium-ion batteries had caused 401 fires across New York City in 2026, resulting in 74 injuries and six deaths as of that announcement.

The department has urged residents not to leave rechargeable batteries charging overnight or unattended and to keep batteries and electric mobility devices away from building exits.

Those warnings were highlighted after a separate deadly apartment fire in the Bronx in late October, which officials attributed to an electric bicycle battery.

The FDNY Foundation’s official battery safety advisory provides further information about reducing the risk of fires involving rechargeable devices.

Despite the broader concerns, investigators have not established any connection between a battery and Thursday’s deadly Sunset Park fire.

Sunset Park Fire Investigation Continues

Fire marshals remained at the Brooklyn property after the flames were extinguished, examining the damaged structure and working to establish how the fire began.

The tragedy is among the deadliest residential fires reported in New York City this year, leaving six people dead and several families facing the aftermath of the devastating overnight blaze.

The incident follows other fire emergencies in Brooklyn this year, including a separate fire on the Brooklyn Bridge during Macy’s Fourth of July fireworks display. That incident was contained without reported injuries.

Authorities have not announced the cause of the Sunset Park fire. The investigation remains ongoing.
