A major blaze at a Burleigh Heads tyre shop triggered an emergency declaration on Monday evening, with thick smoke, loud explosions and dramatic footage circulating across social media. Queensland Police and Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) responded with a large-scale operation as flames tore through the building.
🔥 How the Fire Started
Police were first called around 5.50pm after reports of flames and explosions inside a tyre workshop on West Burleigh Road. Residents across the Gold Coast reported seeing a dense black plume rising above the industrial area, while early eyewitness videos from Facebook captured the intense blaze.
One local resident said: “We heard a massive boom — the whole street shook. Then another explosion came a minute later.”
Another witness described the scene: “The smoke was pitch black and you could smell burning rubber from blocks away.”
🚓 PSPA Emergency Declaration — Now Revoked
Queensland Police initially declared a Public Safety Preservation Act (PSPA) emergency zone due to concerns about hazardous materials and further explosions inside the building. Streets were closed and residents were warned to stay away.
At 10:48pm on Monday, police confirmed the PSPA declaration had been revoked.
QPS said in a statement: “Police would like to thank the community for their assistance.”
📍 Updated QFES Warning: Smoke Expected Overnight
QFES confirmed that although the fire is now contained, crews are still working on an active fire at the intersection of Starling Street and West Burleigh Road.
“There is a fire at the intersection of Starling St and West Burleigh Rd. There will be smoke and a strong smell in the area overnight. Firefighters are working to contain the fire. Stay informed in case the situation changes. Conditions could change quickly.”
The public is advised to keep windows closed and avoid the area if possible.
🚒 Firefighting Efforts Still Underway
More than a dozen QFES crews responded, using hose lines from multiple directions to stop the fire from spreading to nearby businesses. Firefighters used breathing apparatus due to the heavy smoke and toxic fumes from burning tyres.
The fire is contained but not yet fully extinguished, with hotspots expected to smoulder into the night.
📍 Earlier Exclusion Zone
The PSPA exclusion zone covered a wide area earlier in the evening, including:
- Burleigh Street
- West Burleigh Road
- West Street
- Taliban Street
- Dunlin Drive
- Christine Avenue
Police earlier warned: “Residents are urged to avoid the area.”
📢 News Confirmation from Major Outlets
The fire, explosions and PSPA declaration were confirmed by News.com.au, which also reported the scale of the smoke plume captured in early footage.
Further confirmation came from the Courier Mail / Gold Coast Bulletin, detailing the explosions and rapid expansion of the emergency zone.
⏳ What Happens Next?
Fire investigators will access the site once it is declared safe. The cause of the fire remains unknown, though early reports indicate it likely began inside the workshop area.
Residents are urged to monitor QPS and QFES channels for any further changes overnight.
