Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada issued 8,500 Invitations to Apply for permanent residence in an Express Entry draw held on February 6, 2026. The round targeted candidates with French-language proficiency and became one of the largest category-based selections announced in the early months of the year.
Candidates needed a minimum Comprehensive Ranking System score of 400 to be considered. The tie-breaking rule applied to profiles created before 11:11 a.m. UTC on February 3, 2026, meaning candidates with the same score were ranked according to when they entered the Express Entry pool.
Why the French-language draw matters
The size of the draw shows how strongly French-language ability can influence selection under the current Express Entry system. Category-based draws allow the federal government to invite candidates who meet specific economic, occupational or demographic priorities rather than relying only on overall CRS rankings.
French-language proficiency has become an important immigration priority as Canada works to increase the number of French-speaking permanent residents settling outside Quebec. Candidates must still meet the eligibility requirements of an Express Entry-managed program, but qualifying language results can place them in a separate category-based selection pool.
A CRS threshold of 400 is considerably lower than the scores often seen in Provincial Nominee Program rounds. That difference does not mean one route is easier than another, because each draw type assesses a different group of candidates and applies different eligibility conditions.
How the 2026 invitation pattern is developing
The February 6 round was the sixth Express Entry draw of 2026. Earlier selections had focused mainly on Provincial Nominee Program candidates and people with Canadian work experience through the Canadian Experience Class.
Across the first six rounds, the federal government issued 24,178 invitations. Canadian Experience Class invitations accounted for a large share of the early total, while the French-language draw added a substantial group of category-based candidates.
Provincial nominee draws usually carry much higher CRS cut-offs because a provincial nomination adds 600 points to a candidate’s score. French-language and other category-based rounds can produce lower thresholds because invitations are limited to candidates who satisfy the category’s specific requirements.
The changing mix of draws means candidates should not judge their prospects by a single CRS cut-off. A score that is not competitive in one round may still be relevant in a later category-based or program-specific selection.
What invited candidates should prepare
Candidates who receive an Invitation to Apply generally have 60 days to submit a complete permanent residence application. The information in the application must support the claims made in the Express Entry profile, including language ability, education, employment history and family details.
Applicants may need valid language test results, employment reference letters, police certificates, identity records, proof of education and an Educational Credential Assessment where required. Missing, expired or inconsistent documents can delay processing and may place an application at risk.
Candidates who were not invited can continue improving their CRS score through stronger language results, additional skilled work experience, further education or a provincial nomination.
