Chris Wilson Jr., 17, West Virginia Football Commit, Killed in Muncie Shooting

MUNCIE, Indiana — Chris Wilson Jr., a 17-year-old Yorktown High School football standout who had committed to West Virginia University, was killed in a shooting early Monday, October 5, leaving his school community mourning a teenager preparing for a college football career.

Delaware County emergency dispatchers received a shooting report at 2:59 a.m., Muncie Police Deputy Chief Melissa Criswell told The Star Press. Officers found Christopher Wilson Jr. inside a vehicle in the 1400 block of East Cromer Avenue. He had been shot multiple times.

WIBC reported that Wilson was pronounced dead at the scene. The location is near Doctor M.L.K. Jr. Boulevard, according to WTHR.

Police are investigating what happened. The reports available Monday afternoon did not identify a suspect or establish a motive, and investigators had not publicly explained the circumstances leading to the shooting.

School and coach mourn a teammate with big dreams

Yorktown High School principal Stacey Brewer confirmed Wilson’s death in communications to families and staff, saying his family had given permission for the school to share the news.

In the family message reproduced by WV News, Brewer called Wilson “a valued member of our school, our football team, and our community.” She expressed sympathy for his family, friends and teammates.

A separate staff communication, published by WTHR, described a student with big dreams and acknowledged the loss across the school. Staff were asked to avoid speculation because few details were available.

Brewer said Yorktown police had confirmed there was no threat to students or schools. With the district on fall break, she asked parents to check on their children, listen and seek support if needed. Counselors would be available when classes resumed; students needing immediate help could call or text 988.

Head football coach Mike Wilhelm remembered Wilson for his friendship, kindness and daily effort. Despite the attention surrounding his recruitment, Wilhelm said, Wilson did not seek the spotlight.

“Our team has lost a brother, and we will carry him with us forever,” Wilhelm said in a statement carried by The Star Press.

A college football future at West Virginia

Wilson, a defensive end and edge rusher in the 2027 recruiting class, announced his West Virginia commitment on June 11, 2026. His 247Sports profile lists him at 6-foot-5 and 235 pounds. Multiple recruiting outlets described him as a four-star prospect.

He chose the Mountaineers over options including Auburn, Cincinnati and Purdue. In June’s commitment coverage, Wilson explained the connection he felt with the program.

“The coaches were real with me the entire time and showed me exactly how I could fit into the program,” he said.

His recruiting profile records 25 tackles, seven tackles for loss and four sacks during his junior season, alongside four pass breakups, a forced fumble and an interception.

WTHR said it had contacted West Virginia University for a statement; its published update did not include a response. Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact the Muncie Police Department Detective Division at 765-747-4867.
