Just as fresh footage from London offered fans another glimpse of Gotham taking shape, work on The Batman: Part II has been put on hold. Warner Bros. and DC Studios confirmed on Monday, October 5, that production has temporarily paused while director Matt Reeves focuses on a family matter.
The announcement leaves Robert Pattinson’s return as the Dark Knight awaiting a restart, with no date given for filming to resume. But the studios have publicly backed Reeves and expressed their intention to continue the project.
In a statement published by TheWrap, they said: “Matt has the full support of DC Studios and we look forward to continuing the journey soon.”
The studios did not disclose further details about the family matter. Their announcement describes the interruption as temporary, with no cancellation or replacement director announced.
The sequel has already moved through several release dates. As Variety noted, it was previously scheduled for October 2, 2026, then October 1, 2027, before moving to February 2028. With the original film released in March 2022, the current schedule would put almost six years between the two movies.
Pattinson has also suggested audiences should expect a significant shift in direction. Speaking to Collider in an interview covered by Variety, he called the sequel “a real left turn from the first one,” explaining that it retains elements of the original’s atmosphere while taking the story somewhere different.
Gotham filming was making headlines before the pause
The news follows a weekend in which central London was transformed into a snowy Gotham backdrop. Footage shared on Sunday, October 4, showed Bank junction dressed with artificial snow and signs referencing the fictional Gotham Transit Authority.
According to a London filming report, the sequel had been shooting in the capital since June. A figure in a Batman costume was seen near a subway entrance, although Pattinson’s presence at that particular shoot was not confirmed.
Pattinson returns as Bruce Wayne, alongside Jeffrey Wright as Jim Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth and Colin Farrell as Oz Cobb, better known as the Penguin. New additions to the ensemble include Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan and Brian Tyree Henry.
What happens to the release date?
The film’s announced theatrical release remains February 18, 2028. No further change to that date was announced in the production-pause statement.
Reeves revealed the February date in July through a video featuring camera-test footage of Pattinson back in costume, ABC Audio reported. The sequel previously held an October 1, 2027 slot. Reeves also co-wrote the screenplay with Mattson Tomlin.
Separately, Stan recently offered an enthusiastic assessment of the project during an appearance on Happy Sad Confused. “I think it’s a very ambitious thing, and I hope it lands right,” he said, according to The Playlist’s interview coverage.
Those comments addressed the film’s creative ambitions, rather than Monday’s pause. For now, the unanswered questions are when Reeves will return and whether the interruption will affect the remaining production schedule. The studios have offered their support, but no timetable.
