RIYADH — Cristiano Ronaldo has returned to Al Nassr after leaving Portugal’s national-team camp, shifting his attention back to club football while questions about his international future remain unanswered.
The 41-year-old’s return was reported on October 5, with Al Nassr welcoming him on social media as the “GOAT.” It comes days after his departure from Copenhagen brought his relationship with Portugal coach Jorge Jesus into the spotlight.
Jesus has since said Ronaldo can return to the national team if he wants to, describing the episode as a misunderstanding. Ronaldo, meanwhile, has promised to explain why he left.
What happened in Portugal’s camp?
The tension became public after Portugal’s 2–1 victory over Norway in Oslo on September 27. Ronaldo remained on the bench despite warming up, then headed straight to the changing rooms after the final whistle.
Jesus acknowledged his captain’s disappointment but denied there had been an incident. He also disputed suggestions that Ronaldo had refused to train, explaining that the forward had been doing individual mobility and strengthening exercises.
On September 30, Jesus indicated that Gonçalo Ramos would start against Denmark. Ronaldo subsequently announced that he had decided to leave the camp after speaking with Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença.
“In due course, I will tell the truth to all the Portuguese people about my reasons for leaving the national team,” Ronaldo wrote in a statement carried by AFP.
Ronaldo wished his teammates luck, and the federation confirmed his departure. His statement did not explicitly announce international retirement, leaving open the question of whether he will represent Portugal again.
Jesus says Ronaldo can return
After Portugal defeated Norway 2–1 again on October 4, this time in Porto, Jesus said the situation could be resolved. He made clear that Ronaldo’s return remained possible if the forward continued playing and wanted to represent his country.
“There is no resentment. It was a misunderstanding and will be easy to resolve,” Jesus said, translated from Portuguese, in remarks reported by Lusa.
The comments offer Ronaldo a route back, although they do not confirm that he has accepted another call-up or that the two men have settled their differences.
For now, his immediate focus is Al Nassr. The club is scheduled to host Al Diriyah at Al-Awwal Park on Friday, October 9, with kick-off listed at 9 p.m. Saudi time, or 11:30 p.m. IST. Ronaldo’s place in the starting lineup has yet to be confirmed.
His return to club duties moves the story forward, but the explanation he promised Portugal remains the missing piece. Jesus has publicly left the door open. Ronaldo’s next statement could reveal whether he intends to walk through it.
