Christina Applegate Reveals She Was Misdiagnosed With MS After Five Years

LOS ANGELES, October 20, 2026 — Christina Applegate has revealed that doctors reversed her multiple sclerosis (MS) diagnosis after five years, leaving the Emmy-winning actress without an explanation for the debilitating symptoms that have disrupted her life and acting career since 2021.

The 54-year-old Dead to Me star broke down in tears during her return to the MeSsy podcast on Tuesday, telling co-host Jamie-Lynn Sigler that her health has not improved despite being informed she does not have MS.

“I’m back at square one,” Applegate said. Doctors are now investigating the cause of her continuing health problems.

Christina Applegate Breaks Down After MS Diagnosis Reversed

Applegate recalled her doctor entering the room and congratulating her because she did not have multiple sclerosis.

Although others welcomed the news, Applegate said she felt shocked rather than relieved. The diagnosis had provided an explanation for years of treatment, pain and physical limitations.

She described experiencing depression and feeling that illness had taken away her independence and acting career. Losing the diagnosis has added uncertainty without improving her condition.

Medical Tests and Treatment Led Doctors to Reconsider MS

Applegate publicly disclosed her MS diagnosis in August 2021 after experiencing neurological symptoms, including numbness and balance problems.

She previously underwent MRI scans and a spinal tap, with doctors identifying brain lesions during her evaluation.

According to CBS News, Applegate said her doctor had stopped an infusion treatment to observe her B-cell levels. Unexpected findings prompted a reassessment of her original diagnosis.

Further medical evaluation led her doctor to conclude that she did not have MS. The complete clinical findings have not been publicly released, and no alternative diagnosis has been announced.

Applegate Still Uses a Wheelchair as Symptoms Continue

Despite the diagnosis reversal, Applegate continues to experience severe mobility difficulties.

She said she sometimes needs a wheelchair for medical appointments because walking from a parked car into a doctor’s office can be too difficult.

The actress has also described exhaustion, pain and difficulty performing everyday activities. She said some symptoms have worsened rather than improved.

Her doctors are investigating the underlying cause, but no timetable for receiving another diagnosis has been announced.

Neurologist Explains Why Multiple Sclerosis Can Be Misdiagnosed

Dr. Marwa Kaisey, an associate professor of neurology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, joined Applegate and Sigler for a second podcast episode.

Kaisey explained that MS has no single definitive diagnostic test. Doctors must evaluate symptoms, MRI findings, neurological examinations and other evidence while excluding conditions that can produce similar symptoms.

She discussed research in which nearly 20% of a studied group previously diagnosed with MS were later found not to have the disease. That figure should not be interpreted as the misdiagnosis rate among all MS patients.

The distinction matters because reversing a diagnosis does not mean a patient’s symptoms have disappeared or that another cause has been identified.

Health Struggles Changed Her Acting Career and MS Advocacy

Applegate was filming the final season of Netflix’s Dead to Me when her symptoms became increasingly disruptive. Production accommodations helped her complete the series.

Known for Married… with Children, Friends and Anchorman, she subsequently stepped away from regular on-camera acting.

She also expressed concern about her place in the MS community after years of advocacy alongside Sigler, who has lived with the disease for decades.

Her experience reflects the uncertainty that can accompany prolonged illness. Actor Joe Manganiello’s account of a seven-year mystery illness similarly describes the impact of unexplained symptoms, although the two medical cases are unrelated.

Podcast Return Follows Hospitalization and Seven-Month Absence

Applegate’s October 20 appearance marked her return to MeSsy after approximately seven months away.

Sigler announced a temporary hiatus on March 31. The podcast resumed in April, with Sigler continuing episodes featuring guests.

Earlier this year, Applegate’s hospitalization and health difficulties raised concerns about her condition. The earlier report was published before doctors reversed her MS diagnosis.

By August, People reported that she had returned home from the hospital. Her memoir, You With the Sad Eyes, released in March, also documented the personal and professional impact of her illness.

Doctors Continue Investigating Her Unexplained Symptoms

As of October 20, Applegate has not publicly identified another confirmed medical condition or announced a new treatment plan.

Her diagnosis may have changed, but the symptoms affecting her mobility, independence and everyday life remain. For now, her medical team faces the task of determining what has caused those problems since 2021.
