Daniel Suarez Makes NASCAR History in Emotional Coca-Cola 600 Tribute to Kyle Busch

Daniel Suarez produced one of the most emotional victories of his NASCAR Cup Series career Sunday night, winning the 2026 Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway after rain brought the race to an early finish with 27 laps remaining.

The win made Suarez the first Mexican-born driver to capture the Coca-Cola 600, one of NASCAR’s crown-jewel events. It was also his third Cup Series victory and his first since 2024, but the night carried a much deeper meaning because the race came during a weekend when NASCAR was mourning Kyle Busch.

Busch died days before the race after severe pneumonia progressed into sepsis. His death shocked the racing community, and Charlotte became the center of a major tribute. NASCAR honored Busch with No. 8 decals on every car, a painted No. 8 and signature on the frontstretch grass, a tribute billboard near the track entrance and a missing-man formation before the green flag.

How Suarez turned strategy into victory

Suarez was not the dominant driver for most of the race. Kyle Larson won Stage 1, Denny Hamlin won Stage 2 and Christopher Bell took Stage 3, while Tyler Reddick led a race-high 119 laps. Hamlin, Bell and other Joe Gibbs Racing cars showed strong pace through the middle of the race.

The race changed late when Suarez’s crew made a bold pit call during a caution for lightning. Crew chief Ryan Sparks took only two right-side tires, allowing Suarez to gain 13 positions on pit road and move to the front for the restart.

Once out front, Suarez held off Bell and Hamlin as rain closed in. Bell finished second and Hamlin third, while Reddick and Larson completed the top five. NASCAR called the race shortly before midnight after heavy rain soaked the track.

A win dedicated to Kyle Busch

The victory was especially personal for Suarez because of his past connection with Busch. Suarez previously raced for Kyle Busch Motorsports and said Busch regularly encouraged him when he was trying to build his career in American stock car racing.

After the race, Suarez fought back tears and dedicated the win to Busch, his wife Samantha, their children Brexton and Lennix, and the entire Busch family.

The emotional tone was visible throughout the night. Busch’s family attended the race, and NASCAR CEO Steve O’Donnell told them they would always remain part of the NASCAR family. Fans also honored Busch during Lap 8, while every car in the field carried a black No. 8 decal.

The race also featured several major incidents. Chase Elliott crashed on Lap 90 and finished 37th. Connor Zilisch and Austin Cindric were collected in an early crash after Cindric spun. Defending Coca-Cola 600 winner Ross Chastain crashed out after contact from Ricky Stenhouse Jr. Austin Hill drove the No. 33 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet in Busch’s place and finished 26th after RCR temporarily retired the No. 8.

Suarez’s Coca-Cola 600 win will be remembered for more than a late strategy call. It became a historic NASCAR moment, a tribute to Busch’s legacy and one of the most emotional finishes of the 2026 Cup Series season.
