A cyclist has been left critically injured after being found trapped underneath a parked car following a crash in the Dunedin suburb of Caversham on Wednesday evening.
Emergency services were called to Playfair St at around 6.30pm after reports of a serious cycling incident. According to police, the 52-year-old cyclist was discovered wedged beneath a parked vehicle after crashing his bike.
The man was treated at the scene before being rushed to Dunedin Hospital in a critical condition. Authorities have not released his identity, and no update on his condition had been provided by Thursday morning.
Acting Senior Sergeant Iain Notman confirmed that police carried out a full scene examination on Wednesday night while investigations into the cause of the crash continue.
At this stage, officers have not confirmed exactly how the cyclist ended up underneath the parked vehicle or whether any other factors contributed to the crash. The incident remains under active investigation.
Police continue inquiries into Playfair St crash
The crash happened on Playfair St in Caversham, a residential suburb in southern Dunedin. Parts of the area were examined by police as investigators gathered evidence and attempted to piece together the moments leading up to the incident.
Authorities commonly review road conditions, visibility, lighting, the condition of the bicycle, and witness statements in serious cycling crashes. Police have not yet said whether speed, weather, or a medical episode may have been involved.
New Zealand continues to see concerns around cyclist safety, particularly in urban and residential areas where riders often share narrow roads with parked vehicles and evening traffic. According to guidance published by the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA), cyclists and motorists are both urged to remain alert in suburban streets where visibility can quickly change.

Serious cycling incidents remain a road safety concern
While Wednesday’s crash involved a parked vehicle, road safety experts have repeatedly warned that cyclists remain highly vulnerable even in lower-speed environments. Falls, sudden obstacles, poor visibility, and limited reaction time can quickly lead to severe injuries.
The Dunedin incident has also renewed discussion around cycling infrastructure and safer residential street design in New Zealand cities. Safety advocates have long pushed for improved lighting, dedicated cycling lanes, and stronger awareness campaigns aimed at both drivers and riders.
The latest incident follows several other major road accidents reported across New Zealand this month. Swikblog recently reported on a fatal Canterbury highway crash where two people died following a serious SH1 collision near Rakaia.
Police are continuing inquiries into the Playfair St crash and are expected to examine whether any witnesses or nearby CCTV footage can help determine exactly what happened before the cyclist became trapped beneath the parked car.
