Police responded at about 8:40 p.m. Friday, October 2, after shots were reported while the homecoming game was in its second half. Authorities later confirmed that two people were injured and transported to Hennepin County Medical Center.
Police said both victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Earlier reports described them as teenagers, but Police Chief Matt Sackett said authorities had not yet confirmed publicly whether the people shot were students or adults.
The stadium was evacuated as officers secured the school grounds. Eden Prairie Schools directed students, players, marching band members and families to Round Lake Park for reunification.
Shooting happened outside Eden Prairie stadium
Authorities have now clarified that the gunfire did not originate inside the football stadium. Police said the shooting happened outside the stadium in a parking lot on the north side of Eden Prairie High School.
Eden Prairie was hosting Minnetonka in its homecoming matchup, which had started at 7 p.m. Friday. The official Eden Prairie Schools calendar listed the homecoming football game for Friday evening.
The shooting prompted police to clear the stadium and restrict access to the surrounding area while Eden Prairie police, firefighters, Hennepin County EMS and officers from neighboring agencies responded.
The incident disrupted one of the school yearâs largest community events, sending students, families, football players and marching band members away from the stadium as officers investigated.
Two victims taken to HCMC
Police Chief Matt Sackett said both people who were shot were transported to Hennepin County Medical Center and their injuries were considered non-life-threatening.
Authorities had not publicly released the victimsâ names as of the latest update. Police also had not confirmed whether either person attends Eden Prairie High School, Minnetonka High School or another school.
Investigators had not released a detailed account of the circumstances leading up to the gunfire or said publicly whether the victims were deliberately targeted.
Police say there was no active threat
As the evacuation continued Friday night, Eden Prairie Schools told families that police had secured the area. By about 9:52 p.m., the district said the Eden Prairie Police Department had confirmed there was no active threat in the area.
People who remained inside portions of the high school were temporarily placed under a hold while officers secured the campus. That hold was later lifted, and people were directed to leave through the south doors and move toward Round Lake Park.
The response follows other recent campus emergencies in which access and movement were restricted while police investigated reported firearms, including a shelter-in-place response near Towson University.
Families reunited at Round Lake Park
Eden Prairie Schools designated Round Lake Park as the reunification site rather than asking parents to return to the high school while police remained on the scene.
The district directed players, marching band members, students and families toward the park as the evacuation progressed. A specific gathering point was established near the pavilion south of the tennis courts.
The north parking lot at the school was also expected to remain unavailable while investigators continued working in the area.

No suspect in custody
Police said no suspects were in custody in the latest publicly available update. Authorities had also not announced a motive or released a description of a confirmed suspect.
Investigators were continuing to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting, including what happened in the parking lot before the gunfire and whether the two victims were specifically targeted.
Because the investigation remains active, claims circulating on social media about possible suspects, vehicles or motives should not be treated as confirmed unless Eden Prairie Police formally release that information.
Authorities faced a similar challenge separating confirmed information from rapidly circulating online claims during the investigation into a shooting near Westbury High School in Houston.
Homecoming football game set to resume Saturday
The Eden Prairie-Minnetonka game could not be completed Friday night because of the evacuation. Officials said the game was scheduled to resume at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 3.
The resumption comes after police said the immediate threat had ended, although the shooting investigation remains active.
Investigation continues after Friday night shooting
Several important questions remain unanswered, including what led to the shooting, whether the victims were targeted, how many people were involved and whether investigators have identified anyone believed to have fired the shots.
Police have confirmed that the gunfire occurred outside the stadium rather than inside the crowded football venue and that the two people injured were expected to survive.
As of the latest update, authorities had not announced an arrest. Additional details about the victims, possible suspects and circumstances surrounding the shooting are expected as the Eden Prairie Police Department continues its investigation.
