Two Climbers Scale Empire State Building Spire, Unfurl Peace Banner Before Surprise Proposal

Updated: July 5, 2026

New York police are continuing to investigate how two masked climbers reached the restricted spire of the Empire State Building after an unusual incident that combined a peace message with what appeared to be a marriage proposal. The climb took place around midday on July 1, 2026, prompting an emergency response at one of the world’s most recognizable skyscrapers. Officials have not yet publicly explained how the pair accessed the secured upper section or whether any criminal charges will be filed.

Videos shared online showed two people standing high above the public observation decks on the building’s transmission tower while holding a banner that read, “When the power of love beats the love of power, the world knows peace.” The message quickly spread across social media as police responded below.

Emergency Response at the Landmark

The New York Police Department dispatched officers to the Empire State Building after the climbers were spotted in the restricted broadcast tower. An NYPD helicopter circled the area while emergency crews assessed the situation from the ground.

For safety reasons, visitors were moved away from the observation deck during the response. Although the observatory welcomes millions of tourists each year, the tower above it is not open to the public and is reserved for technical and broadcast operations.

The building’s official Empire State Building website explains that public access ends well below the transmission mast.

Proposal Follows Peace Banner Display

After spending several minutes near the top of the structure, the pair began climbing down to a lower maintenance platform. Witnesses reported that the situation took an unexpected turn when the man appeared to kneel before the woman in what looked like a marriage proposal.

The woman later removed her mask before the two embraced, kissed and posed for photographs. They then continued their descent while emergency personnel remained on site.

Timeline of the Incident

According to local reports, the climbers were first seen shortly before noon on the upper section of the tower. Both wore masks while displaying the peace banner against the Manhattan skyline.

One climber briefly descended before climbing back toward the top. Around 12:35 p.m., both individuals started making their way down to a lower platform, where the apparent proposal took place.

The incident ended without any publicly reported injuries, but authorities continued examining how the climbers managed to reach such a highly restricted area.

Security Questions Remain

The investigation is now focused on how the pair gained access to one of the most secure parts of the building. Officials have not disclosed whether barriers were bypassed, security procedures were breached or if the individuals entered through an unauthorized route.

The Empire State Building rises approximately 1,250 feet (381 metres) to its roof and 1,454 feet (443 metres) including its antenna. Conditions at that height can change quickly, with strong winds and limited space creating significant risks for anyone outside designated work areas.

Beyond the climbers’ own safety, emergency responders also had to consider the potential danger to people inside the building and on surrounding streets if a rescue operation became necessary.

Different From an Authorized Climb

The skyscraper has hosted carefully planned promotional climbs before. One of the best-known examples was actor and musician Jared Leto’s supervised ascent in 2023, which was coordinated with building management and professional safety teams.

This week’s incident was different because it involved unauthorized access to a restricted section and required an emergency response. Security experts have long warned that unsanctioned climbs can place both emergency crews and the public at unnecessary risk.

Latest Information

As of the latest publicly available information, authorities have not identified the climbers or confirmed whether arrests have been made. Investigators are continuing to review how access was gained to the restricted tower and whether additional security measures may be needed.

The unusual event drew worldwide attention because it unfolded on one of New York City’s most famous landmarks, but it has also sparked fresh discussion about security at major tourist attractions.

The incident comes as attention remains focused on other public safety developments across the city, including recent New York housing issues affecting hundreds of residents.

Officials are expected to release more information once the investigation into the climbers’ actions and possible legal consequences has been completed.
