BREAKING: Florida State Fires AD Michael Alford — Is Mike Norvell Next?

Florida State has fired athletic director Michael Alford, ending his roughly four-year tenure and triggering a major leadership reset as pressure builds around football coach Mike Norvell. Senior associate athletic director Bruce Warwick will serve as interim AD while the university launches a national search for Alford’s replacement.

The timing makes this far bigger than an administrative change. Florida State is 8-18 since winning the 2023 ACC championship, and Alford’s departure means he will no longer be the person helping decide whether Norvell remains in Tallahassee or whether FSU eventually begins another coaching search.

Florida State Moves On From Michael Alford

Florida State President Richard McCullough confirmed the change, which takes effect immediately.

Board of Trustees chairman Peter Collins said changes of this magnitude are difficult but sometimes necessary. He said FSU has made major investments and structural changes across athletics and Seminole Boosters, but more work is needed to compete in the rapidly changing college sports landscape.

Collins described Alford’s departure as the beginning of the university’s “next phase of restructuring.” That language suggests Florida State is looking beyond one disappointing football result and reassessing the wider direction of its athletic department.

Is Mike Norvell Next?

Norvell has not been fired, and Florida State has made no announcement saying a coaching change is imminent.

But his future is now the central question surrounding the program.

Norvell is reported to be 39-35 overall at Florida State and 22-27 in ACC play. His Seminoles went 13-1 and won the ACC championship in 2023, but FSU has gone just 8-18 since that title victory.

Alford retained Norvell for the 2026 season after another disappointing 2025 campaign. With Alford gone, the final decision on the coach’s future could ultimately fall to Florida State’s next permanent athletic director.

SMU Loss Intensified the Pressure

The latest wave of frustration followed Florida State’s 27-24 loss to SMU on Labor Day night.

SMU committed four turnovers but still won, prompting visible frustration from Seminoles supporters. Some fans were heard chanting for Norvell to be fired.

The defeat did not create FSU’s problems, but it reinforced concerns about a program that has struggled to sustain the momentum of its 2023 championship season.

Major personnel decisions are increasingly defining football seasons at every level. Recent developments around George Kittle’s return for the 49ers and the Falcons-Steelers personnel situation show how quickly expectations can shift when key football decisions change.

Bruce Warwick Takes Over as Interim AD

Bruce Warwick will run the department while Florida State conducts a national search.

Warwick already has extensive experience inside the Seminoles’ football operation, providing some continuity during a potentially turbulent period. FSU has not announced a timetable for naming a permanent athletic director.

$265 Million Stadium Project Is Part of Alford’s Legacy

Alford’s tenure included significant achievements beyond football results.

Florida State completed an approximately $265 million renovation of Doak Campbell Stadium in late 2025, one of the school’s largest recent investments in athletics infrastructure.

However, On3 reported, citing sources, that FSU’s roster investment has not kept pace with its facilities spending and that the current football payroll sits in the lower half of the ACC. Florida State has not publicly confirmed that payroll ranking.

Alford Also Helped Navigate FSU’s ACC Fight

Alford was a key administrator during Florida State’s legal battle with the Atlantic Coast Conference over the league’s grant-of-rights agreement.

Florida State, Clemson and the ACC eventually reached a settlement that created a declining cost for schools seeking to leave the conference. Under the reported agreement, the cost falls by approximately $18 million annually through 2029-30, before dropping to $75 million afterward.

That makes conference strategy another major responsibility awaiting Alford’s successor.

Florida State’s Next AD Inherits a Defining Decision

Alford previously served as president and CEO of Seminole Boosters and held administrative roles at Central Michigan and Oklahoma. His background also included work with the Dallas Cowboys and Cincinnati Bengals.

His successor will inherit a department facing decisions involving football leadership, roster investment, revenue sharing, fundraising and FSU’s long-term conference future.

Official announcements and department updates are available through the Florida State Seminoles athletics website.

For now, Warwick is running the department and Norvell remains the head coach. But Alford’s firing has changed who will make the next major football decision — and that could determine the direction of Florida State for years to come.
