Falcons vs Steelers Today: Start Time, TV Channel, and Cooper Rush Injury Update

PITTSBURGH — The Atlanta Falcons open their 2026 NFL regular season against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday with their quarterback depth already under pressure before the first snap.

Cooper Rush will start at Acrisure Stadium after Tua Tagovailoa was ruled out with an oblique injury. Michael Penix Jr. will also be inactive, leaving undrafted rookie Jack Strand as Atlanta’s backup for a difficult Week 1 road assignment.

Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. ET on Sunday, September 13, with FOX carrying the game. For viewers in India, that is 10:30 p.m. IST.

Atlanta’s quarterback plan changes days before kickoff

The Falcons entered the week expecting Tagovailoa to lead the offense after naming him their Week 1 starter. That plan changed when he was limited in Thursday’s practice with an oblique injury and then missed Friday’s session.

Atlanta subsequently ruled him out, pushing Rush into QB1 duties. The veteran backup brings NFL starting experience, but the timing creates an immediate challenge because he did not spend the full summer operating with Atlanta’s first-team offense.

Rush has also dealt with back spasms ahead of the opener, adding another layer to Atlanta’s quarterback situation. If his condition prevents him from playing or forces him out during the game, Strand would be the next option.

The rapid change is explained in more detail in Atlanta’s move to Cooper Rush after Tua Tagovailoa was ruled out, a decision that reshaped the Falcons’ Week 1 preparation only days before kickoff.

Michael Penix Jr. will not be the emergency option

Penix is not expected to provide Atlanta with an experienced fallback Sunday. Although he returned to full practice participation during the week, the Falcons had already planned to keep him inactive while he continues working back toward full fitness following his knee injury.

That leaves Atlanta in an unusual position for its season opener: the quarterback originally selected to start is unavailable, the other established option remains inactive, and Rush must take control of the offense with Strand behind him.

Bijan Robinson can ease the burden on Rush

The clearest way for Atlanta to protect its replacement starter is through Bijan Robinson. The running back rushed for nearly 1,500 yards last season and is also a valuable receiver, giving Rush a reliable option without forcing the Falcons into a high-volume downfield passing game.

Atlanta will want to stay ahead of the chains, avoid long third downs and limit Pittsburgh’s opportunities to attack the pocket. Robinson’s ability to create yards both as a runner and after short catches could be central to that plan.

Rodgers and Warren give Pittsburgh a different setup

Pittsburgh enters the opener with veteran Aaron Rodgers leading the offense and Jaylen Warren positioned to play a significant role on the ground.

Warren has exceeded 9.5 carries in 16 of his last 17 games, averaging 13.1 rushing attempts over that stretch. That workload is particularly relevant against an Atlanta defense that allowed 4.6 yards per carry during the 2025 regular season.

Rodgers, meanwhile, closed the previous regular season with a 31-of-47 performance for 294 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions against Baltimore. His following playoff appearance was much tougher, finishing 17 of 33 for 146 yards with an interception against Houston.

Atlanta will look to Jessie Bates III and A.J. Terrell to keep Pittsburgh from creating quick gains through the air while the defensive front tries to prevent Warren from controlling the pace.

Falcons defense has a red-zone strength to build on

Atlanta’s defense did produce one notable advantage last season: the Falcons recorded 13 sacks in the red zone, the most in the NFL during the 2025 regular season.

Generating that kind of pressure could be important against Rodgers, especially if Pittsburgh moves the ball consistently between the 20s. Atlanta’s challenge will be reaching those situations without allowing the Steelers’ running game to create manageable downs throughout the drive.

FOX coverage and viewing information

The game will be shown on FOX, with Joe Davis handling play-by-play, Greg Olsen serving as analyst and Pam Oliver reporting from the sideline. Atlanta-area viewers can watch through the local FOX broadcast.

Streaming availability depends on location. The Falcons’ official viewing guide lists FOX One and NFL+ among options inside the Atlanta market, while international viewers can check DAZN availability in their region.

This matchup is also part of an unusual opening week for the league. The 2026 NFL season began with a rare Wednesday opener before the main Week 1 Sunday schedule.

Injuries extend beyond Atlanta’s quarterbacks

The Falcons will also be without cornerback Billy Bowman Jr. and offensive tackle Cameron Williams. Defensive end Za’Darius Smith entered the weekend listed as questionable with a shoulder issue.

Those absences matter because Atlanta is already asking its offense to adjust around a new starting quarterback. Any disruption along the offensive line could make Rush’s assignment harder, while missing defensive personnel would put additional pressure on the secondary against Pittsburgh.
