Canadian health authorities are monitoring three individuals across Ontario and Quebec after possible exposure linked to the growing hantavirus outbreak aboard the expedition cruise ship MV Hondius. Federal officials confirmed the individuals are currently asymptomatic, but isolation measures have been activated as global health agencies continue tracking passengers connected to the vessel.
The situation has drawn international attention after the World Health Organization confirmed multiple suspected and laboratory-confirmed hantavirus cases connected to the ship, including several deaths. The vessel, operated by Oceanwide Expeditions, had been travelling between South America and Cape Verde before health concerns escalated among passengers.
According to Canadian officials, two passengers who had previously left the cruise ship in St. Helena returned to Ontario and immediately entered self-isolation after the outbreak became public. A third individual in Quebec, who reportedly shared a flight with the Ontario passengers, is also isolating while authorities monitor symptoms.
Ontario Health Minister Sylvia Jones said the current risk to the public remains low, noting that officials are conducting ongoing monitoring due to the virusâs long incubation window. Authorities indicated the observation period could last approximately 30 days for those currently isolating.
The outbreak has been linked to the Andes virus strain of hantavirus, which is considered one of the rare variants capable of limited person-to-person transmission. According to the World Health Organization, the incubation period for the virus can extend several weeks, forcing authorities to widen contact tracing efforts.
Global health agencies confirmed that at least eight suspected cases have now been identified in connection with the cruise ship, with several cases already laboratory-confirmed. The outbreak has also been associated with at least three deaths, including a Dutch passenger whose body was removed from the vessel earlier during the voyage.
International concern increased after passengers from multiple countries disembarked from the ship before the outbreak was fully recognized. Canadian authorities said the two Ontario residents returned on the same flight as the Quebec individual currently under monitoring.
The WHO has stressed that the outbreak does not currently represent a pandemic-level threat and has repeatedly stated that public risk remains low outside close-contact exposure scenarios. Medical teams and infectious disease specialists remain onboard the ship as it heads toward the Canary Islands under strict health monitoring protocols.
British and Dutch authorities are also actively tracking passengers connected to the cruise. Two British nationals evacuated from the vessel are reportedly showing signs of improvement while receiving hospital care in South Africa and the Netherlands.
Health experts continue emphasizing that hantavirus infections remain rare globally, though severe cases can lead to dangerous respiratory complications. Symptoms typically include fever, muscle aches, fatigue, and breathing difficulties in advanced stages.
Canadian federal officials confirmed they remain in direct contact with additional Canadians still onboard the MV Hondius and are coordinating with international health agencies as the vessel approaches Europe.
