It’s a big moment for Hollow Knight fans. Developer Team Cherry has finally pulled back the curtain on Sea of Sorrow, the first major expansion for Hollow Knight: Silksong. At the same time, the studio confirmed that a Nintendo Switch 2 edition of the original Hollow Knight is officially in the works.
Sea of Sorrow Arrives in 2026
The newly announced Sea of Sorrow expansion is scheduled to launch in 2026 and will be free for all Silksong players. According to Team Cherry, the DLC will push Hornet’s journey further with new areas to explore, fresh bosses to face, and new tools to master, all wrapped in a nautical-themed setting.
There’s no exact release date just yet, with the studio saying more details will be shared closer to launch. Given Silksong’s famously long and quiet development, most fans aren’t surprised — but the confirmation alone is enough to reignite excitement.
Original Hollow Knight Gets a Switch 2 Upgrade
Alongside the expansion news, Team Cherry also revealed that the original Hollow Knight is getting a dedicated Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. This version will include many of the technical improvements introduced with Silksong on newer hardware.
Players can expect higher resolutions, smoother frame rates, and additional visual enhancements, giving the 2017 classic a modern refresh on Nintendo’s next-generation console.
Even better, existing Switch owners won’t need to buy the game again — the upgrade to the Switch 2 edition will be completely free.
Updates Continue Across All Platforms
Team Cherry also confirmed that support for the original game isn’t slowing down. All current versions of Hollow Knight will continue receiving updates, including bug fixes and quality-of-life improvements.
Some of these changes are already live on PC through public beta branches on Steam and GOG. These updates include full 16:10 and 21:9 aspect ratio support, which is especially welcome for Steam Deck and ultrawide monitor users.
Silksong Passes a Major Sales Milestone
The announcements also came with an impressive milestone. Hollow Knight: Silksong has now sold more than 7 million copies since its release in September, with millions more players jumping in through Xbox Game Pass.
Team Cherry described the response as overwhelming, thanking the community for its creativity, fan art, mods, and the way players continue to support one another through the game’s toughest challenges.
A Great Time to Be a Hollow Knight Fan
With a major expansion confirmed, a free next-gen upgrade on the way, and a growing global audience, the Hollow Knight series appears to be stronger than ever.
For players looking to dive back into challenging action games with meaningful expansions, it’s a moment that echoes other recent updates in the genre, such as major content drops for highly anticipated titles.
