Indie Game Pulled From Steam After Games Workshop DMCA — All Over “Warhammer-Like” Shoulder Pads

An indie sci-fi strategy RPG briefly disappeared from Steam earlier this year, and the developer has now explained what happened. According to Tundra Interactive, the takedown followed a DMCA complaint filed on behalf of Games Workshop, centered on a specific piece of armor shown in the game’s original featured trailer: a pair of oversized shoulder pads the company reportedly described as “oversized convex shoulder pads with a metallic rim.”

The original DMCA notice was issued by an individual named “Mal Reynolds” on behalf of Games Workshop. Tundra initially assumed it was a troll claim, partly because “Mal Reynolds” is also the name of the protagonist from Firefly. However, the studio later confirmed the takedown was legitimate.

In comments shared with IGN, Tundra said the complaint was tied to a shot in the trailer featuring the character’s armor. The studio maintains the artwork used in the trailer was original work created by its artists, but it still chose to remove the trailer from the Steam store page rather than get pulled into a lengthy DMCA process.

Visually, the issue is easy to understand: the character’s broad, exaggerated silhouette and bulky shoulder plates can appear reminiscent of a Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine. With the added spike detail, some viewers might even mistake the look for a Chaos Astartes-style design. Tundra said it disagreed with Games Workshop’s assessment, but removed the trailer anyway as the simplest path to restoring the listing.

In its statement, Tundra explained that its priority is finishing the game and shipping content, including multi-language font support needed to deliver proper translations. The studio said it may upload an updated trailer later after it finds time to adjust the disputed shot.

Void War is now back on Steam, apparently unaffected beyond the trailer swap, with a new trailer added as a precaution. For other indie teams working in grimdark sci-fi, the episode is a reminder that even small design details can invite scrutiny from major IP holders—especially when visual language overlaps in armor-heavy universes.
