John Mateer’s Oklahoma Comeback Ends With Interception and Final-Play Sack

For a few minutes in Ann Arbor, John Mateer looked like he had completely changed the story of Oklahoma’s afternoon.

He had been heavily criticized through a brutal first half. Oklahoma had zero points. Michigan had the momentum. Then Mateer came out after halftime, found Mackenzie Alleyne for a 22-yard touchdown and suddenly had the Sooners right back in the game.

By the fourth quarter, Oklahoma had erased the entire 10-point deficit and tied it at 10-10.

Then everything unraveled again.

Michigan got the turnover Oklahoma could not afford

Mateer was intercepted by Michigan defensive back Jyaire Hill in the fourth quarter, and the Wolverines immediately turned the mistake into the touchdown that ultimately decided the game.

Jordan Marshall scored from one yard out to put Michigan ahead 17-10, and Oklahoma never recovered.

The moment instantly took over social media. On3 posted simply:

“MICHIGAN PICKS OFF JOHN MATEER 👀”

That was a dramatic reversal from earlier in the second half, when Mateer had been generating attention for completely different reasons.

FOX College Football highlighted his physical running after Mateer flipped through contact for a first down, writing:

“Mateer FLIPS his way to the OU first down.”

That sequence summed up Mateer’s afternoon better than almost anything else: moments of toughness and improvisation mixed with mistakes Oklahoma could not overcome.

Mateer finished 17-of-33 for 189 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He was also Oklahoma’s leading rusher with 45 yards on 13 carries. Rocky Beers became his most productive receiver, finishing with six catches for 94 yards.

Oklahoma actually outgained Michigan 289-263, but the Sooners committed two turnovers while Michigan finished without one. That difference mattered far more than the total-yard numbers. Oklahoma’s official game center has the complete matchup information and statistics.

The last drive made the ending even tougher

Mateer still had one more chance with Oklahoma trailing by seven.

He scrambled for 22 yards with just over a minute remaining, briefly giving the Sooners hope of one final push.

Then came a false start, an incompletion and finally the play that ended it.

Michigan’s Nate Marshall got to Mateer for a sack with 17 seconds left. Big Ten Network called it a “WALK-OFF SACK,” adding that Marshall had brought Mateer down to seal Michigan’s win.

FOX’s description was even more direct:

“MATEER IS SACKED AND @UMICHFOOTBALL TAKES DOWN OKLAHOMA.”

Another widely shared post captured the frustration around Oklahoma’s final possession with the line:

“You will not believe who John Mateer passed the ball to on this play with 30 seconds left….”

The reaction reflected just how strange Mateer’s day had become. He went from being blasted during the first half, to leading Oklahoma back into the game, to finishing on the wrong side of the two biggest defensive plays of the fourth quarter.

The loss was also a sharp contrast with Mateer’s performance against Michigan last season. In Oklahoma’s 24-13 win in 2025, he accounted for 344 total yards and three touchdowns, including 270 through the air. Oklahoma’s pregame notes revisited that performance before Saturday’s rematch.

This time, Michigan got the final word.

Final: Michigan 17, Oklahoma 10.
