Yellow Light Flip Phone with physical keypad, OLED screen and 5G support

Light Flip Phone: $299 Price, Specs and April 2027 Release Date

Light has unveiled the Light Flip, a $299 minimalist flip phone with 5G, physical buttons and no touchscreen or exterior display. Available for preorder now, the colorful device is expected to ship in April 2027 as a simpler alternative for people who want essential phone tools without social media and endless scrolling.

Light developed the phone after interviews showed that younger flip-phone users liked the format but often disliked the build quality of existing models. Co-founder Kaiwei Tang helped create the original Motorola Razr more than 20 years ago, while fellow co-founder Joe Hollier described the Flip as the familiar LightOS experience in a fully tactile design.

Light Flip price and April 2027 release date

The unlocked Light Flip costs $299, far below the $799 retail price cited for the aluminum Light Phone III. Light reduced the price by using a plastic body and removing the touchscreen, NFC reader and selfie camera.

Customers can also get the phone with Light’s service for $39 per month over two years. Light recently tested phone contracts with Andrew Yang’s anti-doomscrolling carrier Noble Mobile. Under Light’s own two-year offering, the Light Phone III costs $59 per month.

Orders and compatibility information are available through the official Light Phone website. Buyers should consider the long preorder period because shipments are not planned until April 2027.

Light Flip specs, camera and connectivity

The Light Flip has a 2.8-inch internal OLED display operated through a directional pad, function buttons and a traditional number keypad. Users can type with T9 predictive text or use voice-to-text and audio messages. A small star-shaped light on the front signals notifications without requiring an exterior screen.

The phone uses a MediaTek MT8873 processor with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. It supports 5G, 4G LTE, Bluetooth 5.0, Wi-Fi, USB-C charging, a physical nano-SIM and eSIM. Audio works through Bluetooth headphones or the included 3.5mm headphone jack.

A rear 50-megapixel sensor produces 12-megapixel photos. The back panel is secured with four screws and provides access to a replaceable 1,800mAh battery, offering more user-serviceability than most current smartphones.

Light will sell the phone in black, navy blue, red, pink, yellow and light gray. Its thick, blocky plastic construction helps control the price but may not appeal to shoppers looking for a slim premium handset.

What LightOS offers—and what is missing

LightOS includes calling, messaging, alarms, a calculator, calendar, notes, navigation, music, podcasts and a camera. Users can upload music, download podcasts and access additional tools created through Light’s software development kit.

The limitations are deliberate. There is no NFC for contactless payments, touchscreen, selfie camera or native access to attention-heavy social platforms. The phone also gives up conveniences such as Apple Pay, iMessage and mainstream smartphone apps, so it may work better as a secondary device than a complete replacement for some buyers.

Light’s focus on reduced screen use arrives amid growing scrutiny of engagement-driven platforms, including questions raised by the Meta and Google social media addiction verdict.

How it differs from premium foldable phones

The Light Flip uses the clamshell format for disconnection rather than a larger flexible display. That places it at the opposite end of the market from devices such as the expected Apple iPhone Fold and its premium foldable design. Light’s model prioritizes tactile controls, basic communication and a lower price instead of flagship cameras, advanced apps and multitasking.

Who should consider the Light Flip?

The phone is aimed at people who want calls, texts, directions, music and podcasts without carrying a conventional smartphone. However, anyone dependent on mobile payments, WhatsApp, streaming services or workplace apps should check whether the reduced software meets their daily needs before preordering.

Light is supporting preorder customers through its “Flip Your Life” program, which will provide biweekly newsletters and community guidance ahead of launch. The initiative reflects the company’s view that leaving a smartphone is a lifestyle adjustment, while helping customers prepare for the Light Flip’s planned April 2027 arrival.
