The aerial message added another twist to Kiffin’s first return to Oxford as LSU’s head coach. Both teams entered the matchup 2-0, but the buildup at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium has been dominated by Kiffin facing the program he coached for six seasons.

The reaction traces back to Kiffin’s departure following the 2025 regular season. He finished his six-year Ole Miss tenure with a 55-19 record and left after the Rebels went 11-1 in the regular season. Ole Miss continued its College Football Playoff run without him.

Extra security surrounds Kiffin’s Oxford return
Authorities prepared for an enormous game-day crowd, with roughly 100,000 people expected around Oxford despite Vaught-Hemingway Stadium holding about 64,000.
Mississippi deployed additional state troopers, a helicopter and a mobile command center, while Louisiana personnel also assisted with LSU’s traveling party. Officials described the measures as proactive rather than a response to a specific publicly identified threat.
Ole Miss also warned that fans wearing opposing-team colors would not be permitted in its student section.
The precautions carry additional context because Kiffin experienced a chaotic return to another former school in 2021, when objects were thrown onto the field during Ole Miss’ game at Tennessee.

ESPN placed the matchup at the center of the college football weekend by bringing College GameDay to The Grove. Actor and Ole Miss supporter Morgan Freeman joined the show as celebrity guest picker.
