Official Parade Route for 2025
The official route confirmed by the city runs on a festive loop through the main shopping streets, starting and finishing at Manchester Cathedral:
- Manchester Cathedral
- Victoria Street
- Deansgate
- John Dalton Street
- Cross Street
- Market Street
- St Mary’s Gate
- Back along Deansgate
- Victoria Street
- Return to Manchester Cathedral
This longer loop, introduced in recent editions of the parade, allows more families across the city centre to see the floats, dancers and performers without overcrowding a single street. The official route is also highlighted on maps shared by CityCo and Manchester BID, which support the event with city-centre businesses.
What’s New in the Manchester Christmas Parade 2025?
This year’s Manchester Christmas Parade will be the biggest edition yet, with more than 400 performers, dancers, musicians and festive characters taking over the city centre. The 2025 parade adds several new features that families will love:
- Festive Fantasy Candyland Castle – a brand-new giant float filled with colourful characters.
- Elf Express with Santa – Santa will arrive on a dedicated Christmas float this year.
- Snow Queen in her Winter Globe – roaming performers interacting with crowds.
- Reindeer, toy soldiers and giant puppets throughout the route.
- Local community groups and Manchester-based performers joining the line-up.
Organisers have confirmed that the 2025 parade will be “the most magical and colourful one yet,” making it a must-see event for families visiting the city centre.
Road Closures and Parking Suspensions
Because the parade winds through some of Manchester’s busiest streets, there are significant road closures and parking suspensions in place on the day. According to Manchester City Council’s road-closure notice, key streets will be shut to traffic in several phases.
Key road closures on Sunday 7 December
- 8:00 am – 5:00 pm: Victoria Street (Deansgate to Cathedral Approach), Cateaton Street (Deansgate to Exchange Square)
- 11:00 am – 3:00 pm: Victoria Bridge Street, Deansgate (Victoria Street to John Dalton Street), John Dalton Street, Cross Street, Market Street, St Mary’s Gate
- 11:00 am – 6:00 pm: St Ann’s Street (Deansgate to Cross Street)
Public Transport Changes: Tram & Bus Diversions
Due to large crowds and road closures, Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) has announced several changes to tram and bus services during the parade hours:
- Exchange Square Metrolink stop will be closed between 12:00pm and 2:30pm.
- Trams on the East Didsbury, Rochdale and Airport lines may operate on revised routes.
- Bus routes through Deansgate, Cross Street and Market Street will be diverted.
- Taxi ranks on St Mary’s Gate and Deansgate will be temporarily suspended.
Visitors are strongly advised to use Metrolink before 12pm or after 3pm where possible, or consider Park & Ride facilities for easier travel into the city.
Parking suspensions
From 6:00 pm on Saturday 6 December until 5:00 pm on Sunday 7 December, parking bays are suspended on much of Deansgate, Victoria Street, St Ann’s Street, John Dalton Street, Cross Street, King Street West, Market Street, St Mary’s Gate and surrounding side streets. Drivers should check signs carefully and plan to use city-centre car parks instead.
Bus diversions and public transport
Transport for Greater Manchester has confirmed that a range of bus services will be diverted around the city centre while the parade is in progress and while streets are shut for set-up and clean-up. Services including the 8, 10, 35, 36, 37, 38, 50, 67, 100, V1 and V2 will avoid the parade loop, with diversions generally in place from 8:00 am until 6:00 pm.
Passengers are advised to allow extra time and check TfGM’s live updates or printed diversion notices at stops on the morning of the parade.
Weather Forecast: What Conditions to Expect
MANCHESTER WEATHERIt wouldn’t be a Manchester Christmas without a bit of cloud. Forecasts for Sunday 7 December suggest a cool, mainly cloudy afternoon with temperatures around 9–11 °C.
- Late morning: Light rain showers possible as crowds begin to arrive
- 1:00–3:00 pm (parade time): Mostly cloudy, feeling cool but not bitterly cold
- Later afternoon: A risk of showers returning as streets begin to reopen
Families should dress in warm, layered clothing, bring waterproofs just in case and consider gloves and hats for younger children who will be standing still to watch the floats pass by.
What You’ll See on the Parade Route
The Manchester Christmas Parade has quickly become one of the most eye-catching festive events in the UK. Organisers, including outdoor-arts specialists and community groups, promise more than 400 performers for the 2025 edition.
Visitors can look out for:
- Huge illuminated puppets and snow-queen style characters towering over the crowds
- Marching bands and samba drummers bringing a carnival energy to Deansgate
- Local community choirs singing Christmas favourites along the route
- Stilt walkers, acrobats and dancers in red-and-white costumes
- Santa and his elves riding the finale float as the parade returns to the Cathedral
Street performers and pop-up activities are also planned across the retail district, with shops and cafes running extended festive offers to match the parade atmosphere.
Best Viewing Spots for Families
Because the route loops around the city centre, there are several good places to watch the parade without being crushed in the busiest sections.
- Victoria Street near Manchester Cathedral: Ideal if you want to see the parade set off and return.
- Deansgate (between Victoria Street and John Dalton Street): Wide pavements and great backdrop for photos.
- Cross Street / Market Street junction: One of the liveliest parts of the route, close to shops and cafes.
- St Mary’s Gate: Good compromise if you want atmosphere but slightly fewer crowds than Market Street.
Arrive at least 30–45 minutes before 1:00 pm if you’re attending with small children or anyone who needs step-free access, as railings and pavements fill up quickly.
Travel Tips & Accessibility
With so many central roads closed, driving directly into the parade loop is rarely the best option. Instead:
- Use Metrolink to get into the city centre, aiming for stops such as Victoria, Exchange Square or Deansgate-Castlefield.
- Check TfGM live travel updates on the morning of the parade for any last-minute disruption.
- Consider parking at out-of-centre car parks and walking or using the free city-centre buses where available.
- For accessibility needs, look for level access areas near Manchester Cathedral and along Deansgate where stewards can assist.
Parents with buggies may find it easier to stand slightly back from the railings, where there’s more room to move and children can still see performers go by.
