Marc Darcy Fire Latest: Huge Salford Blaze Guts Store and Closes Bury New Road

A large overnight fire has gutted the Marc Darcy menswear premises in Salford, shutting Bury New Road and sending thick smoke across the surrounding area as firefighters worked into Thursday morning.

The fire broke out at the commercial property near Hilton Street shortly before 1:40am on 6 August. Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said the building was already well alight when the first crews reached the scene.

Images taken during the night showed flames consuming much of the property, which houses the Marc Darcy suit shop, showroom and warehouse. Part of the building later collapsed after being severely damaged by the fire.

Bury New Road was closed in both directions near Hilton Street and Upper Camp Street. Police helped maintain the cordon while residents were advised to avoid the area and keep their windows and doors closed because of the volume of smoke.

Specialist crews worked through the night

The scale of the blaze prompted a response involving eight fire engines from Moss Side, Manchester Central, Salford, Broughton, Philips Park and Blackley stations.

Firefighters were supported by the Scorpion aerial appliance from Salford, a high-volume pump from Cheadle and a turntable ladder from Whitehill. Crews used two jets and elevated equipment to direct water onto the approximately 50-metre-by-50-metre building.

The aerial appliances allowed water to be directed onto areas that were difficult or unsafe to approach from ground level. This became particularly important after fire damage left sections of the structure unstable.

Station Commander Carl Haslam shared video from the incident and said crews had been working hard to bring the flames under control. An incident update carried by ITV News Granada said emergency services remained at the site as firefighters dealt with the remaining fire and worked to make the building safe.

No deaths or injuries were announced in the initial reports. Officials had not confirmed whether anyone was inside the premises when the fire started, meaning the early information should not be treated as a final casualty assessment.

The cause also remained unknown. There was no official suggestion that the fire was deliberate or suspicious. A detailed investigation may begin only after the site has cooled and structural specialists determine that investigators can enter safely.

The operation follows another significant commercial incident in the region, when a large fire in Manchester’s Trafford Park caused road closures and sent dark smoke across parts of the city.

Fire could disrupt Marc Darcy customers and local travel

The affected premises at 271–291 Bury New Road were more than a conventional fashion outlet. Marc Darcy describes the Salford site as its headquarters and only physical showroom where customers can view the company’s complete menswear collection.

The showroom was connected to a warehouse that the company had previously described as holding more than 100,000 garments. It was not immediately clear how much stock had been damaged or whether any part of the warehouse escaped the fire.

No financial loss estimate had been released, and Marc Darcy had not confirmed how the incident would affect online orders, deliveries, collections or showroom appointments. Customers with outstanding purchases should retain their order details and wait for direct communication from the company.

The closure of Bury New Road added a wider impact for commuters and businesses. The route is a busy connection between Salford and Manchester, and Station Commander Haslam warned that the incident was likely to cause significant traffic problems.

No reopening time was announced in the morning updates. Even after the flames are extinguished, the road may need to remain closed while crews check for hotspots, remove equipment and assess unstable walls, debris and damaged utilities.

Residents near Bury New Road and Hilton Street were asked to keep windows and doors shut. Anyone who could smell smoke indoors was advised to limit the amount of outside air entering the property. People with asthma or other respiratory conditions could be more sensitive to the smoke and should seek medical help if symptoms develop.

There was no general evacuation order. The warning was intended to reduce exposure while keeping the area clear for emergency vehicles. A comparable precaution was issued during the Port Talbot fire that caused widespread smoke and road closures.

The cause of the Salford blaze, final casualty information, value of the damage and condition of the warehouse stock remained unconfirmed. Further updates were expected from the fire service, police and Marc Darcy after the immediate emergency response and structural assessment.
