Mega Millions $533 Million Jackpot Won in Illinois as Single Ticket Hits All Six Numbers

A single Mega Millions ticket sold in Illinois has matched all six numbers to win the massive $533 million jackpot in Tuesday night’s drawing, marking the biggest lottery prize awarded in 2026 so far. The win instantly ends months without a Mega Millions jackpot winner and places Illinois back among the states with major lottery victories.

The winning numbers drawn were 16, 21, 30, 35, 65 with the Mega Ball 7. According to the official Mega Millions lottery website, one ticket matched all six numbers, securing the entire prize.

Illinois Ticket Hits $533 Million Mega Millions Jackpot

Lottery officials confirmed that the jackpot for the March drawing had climbed to an estimated $533 million, with a lump-sum cash option valued at approximately $244.2 million. The Illinois ticket holder now has the choice between taking the full prize through annual installments or claiming the reduced one-time cash payout.

Mega Millions also noted that Illinois has now recorded 17 jackpot wins or shared jackpots since the lottery began, further strengthening the state’s history with major lottery prizes.

What the Winner Could Actually Take Home

Although the advertised jackpot is $533 million, the final payout depends on the option the winner selects and the taxes applied to lottery winnings.

Most jackpot winners typically choose the $244.2 million cash option. However, federal taxes immediately reduce that amount. A mandatory 24% federal withholding would lower the payout to roughly $185.6 million.

Because lottery winnings fall into the highest federal tax bracket, the final taxable amount could drop further under the 37% federal marginal tax rate, leaving the winner with approximately $153.8 million before any other financial planning or deductions.

Illinois also applies a 4.95% state income tax on lottery winnings, which further reduces the net amount the winner ultimately keeps.

Installment Option Could Spread the Prize Over Decades

Instead of the lump sum, the winner may choose the annuity option, which pays the full $533 million across 30 annual payments. Each payment would average around $17.7 million per year before federal taxes.

After applying the federal marginal rate, those annual payments could fall to roughly $11.15 million per year before state taxes are considered.

Massive Odds Behind the Jackpot Win

Winning a Mega Millions jackpot requires overcoming extremely long odds. The probability of matching all six numbers is roughly 1 in 290,472,336, making the Illinois victory statistically extraordinary.

For comparison, the odds are only slightly better than those of the Powerball lottery, which has jackpot odds of around 1 in 292 million.

First Mega Millions Jackpot Win of 2026

Tuesday’s jackpot marks the first Mega Millions jackpot winner of 2026. The last Mega Millions grand prize before this was claimed in November 2025, when a single ticket in Georgia won a staggering $983 million.

Shortly afterward, the U.S. lottery spotlight shifted to Powerball when a ticket from Arkansas captured an enormous $1.82 billion jackpot. Before this week’s Mega Millions draw, the biggest lottery prize awarded in 2026 had been a $209.3 million Powerball jackpot won by a ticket buyer in North Carolina.

Mega Millions tickets are sold in 45 states, Washington D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Each ticket costs $5 and includes a randomly assigned multiplier that can boost non-jackpot prizes by 2X, 3X, 4X, 5X, or even 10X.

For now, lottery officials have not revealed the identity of the Illinois ticket holder. The winner typically has several months to claim the prize, and once confirmed, the jackpot will go down as the largest lottery win of the year so far.
