Melbourne Showgrounds Crash: Car Hits Pedestrians, 1 Dead, Another Critical

A deadly collision outside Melbourne Showgrounds has left one person dead and another with life-threatening injuries after a car mounted a kerb and struck pedestrians in Ascot Vale on Saturday, drawing urgent attention due to its timing during a major public event.

The incident occurred just before 5pm on Langs Road, directly outside the showgrounds where the Supanova Comic Con & Gaming convention was underway. Police said a grey Toyota veered onto the footpath and hit two pedestrians. One victim died at the scene and is yet to be formally identified, while the second was rushed to hospital in critical condition.

A man believed to be the driver has been arrested and will be interviewed by police. Authorities have not yet confirmed the cause of the crash, with investigators working to establish the circumstances surrounding how the vehicle left the roadway.

Collision during major event raises immediate concerns

The crash unfolded at a time when thousands of visitors were attending Supanova, one of Australia’s largest pop culture conventions, known for drawing large crowds across two days. The Melbourne event this year featured international guests including actors Jamie Campbell Bower and Andy Serkis, adding to foot traffic in an already busy precinct.

Langs Road, a key access point to the showgrounds, was filled with pedestrians and vehicles moving in and out of the venue when the car mounted the kerb. Witnesses described a sudden and chaotic moment as emergency services rushed to the scene and secured the area.

The presence of large crowds has intensified scrutiny on how such an incident could occur in a controlled event environment. While it remains unclear whether speed, driver condition or other factors played a role, the location and timing have made the crash particularly significant.

Investigation underway as police seek answers

Detectives from the Major Collision Investigation Unit are leading inquiries and have appealed for witnesses, as well as anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage, to come forward. In incidents of this nature, video evidence often plays a critical role in reconstructing the sequence of events.

The tragedy has also highlighted broader concerns about pedestrian safety in high-density areas, particularly during large-scale events where foot traffic and vehicle access overlap. Even with traffic management in place, moments of failure can have severe consequences.

As investigations continue, authorities are expected to examine all possible factors, including the vehicle’s movement, road conditions and driver actions in the moments leading up to the crash. Anyone with information has been urged to contact Crime Stoppers Victoria.
