The woman was travelling on a Route 1 tram along Eastern Road, near Kings Way, when a man allegedly lunged at her around midday. Witnesses said she had been travelling with her dog when the attack unfolded, adding to the shock for passengers who suddenly found themselves inside an active crime scene.
According to ABC News, the tram stopped almost immediately as emergency services converged on the area.
Witness footage showed police moving quickly to restrain a man near the tram while an ambulance was seen entering oncoming traffic in an effort to reach the injured woman.
The incident comes amid renewed concern over violent attacks on public transport and in busy urban areas. In another recent case, a 59-year-old man was fatally stabbed aboard a J train in Queens after what authorities said began as a dispute.
Woman was travelling with her dog when attack happened
One of the most striking details from the South Melbourne incident is that the victim had reportedly been travelling with her dog moments before the attack.
Witnesses described seeing paramedics treating the woman beside the stopped tram before she was taken to hospital. ABC reported that she suffered a stab wound to the neck and was seriously injured.
There was no immediate indication that the woman and the alleged attacker knew each other.
Police are treating the incident as an allegedly random assault, making the circumstances especially confronting for other passengers aboard the tram.
ABC reported that the man allegedly used a kitchen knife. That detail remains attributed to the initial report while authorities continue their investigation.
The tram itself became the centre of a rapidly developing emergency response, with police vehicles, paramedics and stunned onlookers gathering near Eastern Road.
Footage captured at the scene showed officers pinning a man down during the arrest as emergency crews continued treating the victim nearby.
37-year-old man arrested near stopped tram
Police arrested a 37-year-old man of no fixed address near the tram shortly after the alleged stabbing.
He was expected to be interviewed by investigators on Tuesday afternoon. No charges had been publicly announced at the time of publication.
The attack happened aboard Melbourne’s Route 1 tram, one of the city’s established services passing through South Melbourne.
Investigators are now trying to establish exactly what happened in the moments before the woman was attacked and whether any additional footage was captured by passengers, nearby businesses or passing motorists.
Police have appealed for anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward.

This is a developing story. The woman’s condition, possible charges against the arrested man and further details about the moments leading up to the attack may change as police release new information.
