Six Arrested on Monash Freeway After Brighton East Burglary

MELBOURNE — Six people were arrested on the Monash Freeway on Tuesday after an alleged aggravated burglary at a Brighton East home where a couple and their infant were inside, bringing outbound traffic to a standstill as police intercepted a stolen four-wheel-drive.

The operation in Chadstone followed the theft of two vehicles from a property on Clonaig Street just after 5.30am on October 6, according to Victoria Police.

“An occupant was woken by noise inside the Clonaig Street property just after 5.30am,” police said in a statement provided to 7NEWS.

Police said the intruders stole two vehicles and fled. Nobody was injured in the burglary.

Family heard banging before neighbour raised the alarm

The residents told ABC News they were woken by banging while at home with their infant. The man, who asked to remain anonymous, said he went partway downstairs and switched on lights but initially saw nothing.

“I went halfway down, turned on a few lights, didn’t see anything,” he told the broadcaster.

A second bang followed. The couple believed the intruders had entered through a side door, and a neighbour then called to warn them. They said they were shaken and intended to strengthen their home security.

Stolen Nissan intercepted; Audi recovered after collision

One of the stolen vehicles, a Nissan 4WD, was later spotted being driven erratically on EastLink. Police monitored it through several eastern and south-eastern suburbs before intercepting it in Chadstone just after midday.

ABC footage showed more than a dozen officers at the scene, including police in tactical gear. Unmarked vehicles appeared to pin the grey Nissan, which had damage to its front.

All six occupants were arrested and were being interviewed, police said. Investigators were seen placing items from the vehicle into evidence bags, although the contents were not identified.

The second stolen vehicle, an Audi, was recovered after a collision in Endeavour Hills. The reports reviewed did not establish who was driving it or provide further details of that crash.

The freeway operation closed outbound lanes and caused substantial traffic queues. ABC reported that all lanes had reopened by about 1.15pm.

Police said: “No one was injured during the incident.” The accounts reviewed did not include confirmed charges, court dates or the arrested occupants’ names and exact ages.

Melbourne police were also investigating a separate attack on a woman aboard a Route 1 tram in South Melbourne.
