MIAMI — Four people were hospitalized Monday morning after a construction crane collapsed in Miami’s Brickell neighborhood, damaging vehicles and setting a white SUV on fire near Brickell Bay Drive and Southeast 12th Street.
The September 14, 2026 collapse triggered a complex emergency response in one of Miami’s busiest high-rise districts. Three construction workers were among those taken to the hospital, while the woman driving the SUV managed to escape after realizing the crane was falling.
Miami Police told local media that everyone involved survived. Authorities had not publicly released the names of those hospitalized or a full breakdown of their injuries in the initial updates.

Crane collapses near Brickell Bay Drive
The crane came down near Southeast 12th Street and Brickell Bay Drive, an area surrounded by residential towers, offices, businesses and active construction sites.
Video and images from the scene showed the fallen crane near damaged vehicles as dark smoke rose between surrounding buildings. The white SUV caught fire after the collapse, adding another hazard for emergency crews responding to the scene.
According to fire rescue information reported locally, the SUV driver noticed the crane falling and was able to get out of the vehicle. No deaths were reported.
Three construction workers required complex rescue
Three construction workers became trapped inside a container or enclosed work area following the collapse.
Rescue crews had to cut a small opening into the structure to reach the workers and remove them. The three workers were among four people transported to a hospital.
CBS News Miami reported that City of Miami Fire Rescue described the response as a complex rescue operation involving four patients.
The exact medical condition of each patient had not been fully disclosed in the first official reports.
SUV fire adds to hazards at collapse site
The emergency involved several risks at the same time, including heavy fallen equipment, trapped workers, damaged vehicles and fire.
The combination required firefighters and technical rescue teams to secure the scene before safely reaching those affected. Early footage showed the crane close to the burning SUV, but officials had not released a detailed reconstruction explaining how each vehicle was damaged.
The incident follows another major Miami emergency involving vehicles and fire. Earlier this month, an Amazon cargo plane crash at Miami International Airport also required an extensive rescue response after the aircraft left the runway and struck vehicles. The two incidents are unrelated.
Brickell Bay Drive closed during emergency response
Brickell Bay Drive was closed between Southeast 12th Street and Southeast 13th Street while firefighters, police and rescue crews worked around the fallen crane.
Local reporting also listed eastbound Northwest 17th Street at Seventh Avenue among road restrictions during the emergency response. Drivers should rely on current city traffic information because temporary closures can change as cleanup progresses.
The location makes the incident particularly disruptive. Brickell combines dense residential development, offices, construction projects and heavy vehicle and pedestrian traffic within a relatively compact area.
Cause of crane collapse not yet confirmed
Authorities had not announced what caused the crane to fall in the initial updates.
No official finding had established mechanical failure, operator error, weather or another specific factor as the cause. Assigning responsibility before investigators examine the equipment and construction activity would therefore be premature.
Officials had also not publicly identified any company or individual as responsible for causing the collapse.
A separate Miami incident earlier this year also required multiple hospital transports after an air-conditioning failure aboard a GlobalX flight left four people hospitalized. That event was unrelated to Monday’s crane collapse but similarly required a coordinated emergency medical response.
Latest confirmed details from Brickell
As of Monday’s initial updates, four people had been hospitalized, including three construction workers rescued from the affected work area. The woman driving the white SUV escaped as the crane came down, and Miami Police said everyone survived.
The key details still awaiting official clarification include the patients’ conditions, the exact sequence of the collapse and the cause of the crane failure. Any findings on responsibility will depend on evidence collected during the investigation rather than images or video from the scene alone.
