Mt Eden Corrections Facility is under intense public and political scrutiny after 14 prison staff members across two Auckland prisons were arrested in what authorities described as part of a wider police operation targeting alleged criminal activity linked to prisons.
Nine staff members from Mt Eden Corrections Facility were arrested on Wednesday, while another five reintegration officers working at Kohuora Auckland South Corrections Facility were also taken into custody following the same investigation.
The arrests include Corrections officers and senior Corrections officers, according to Deputy Commissioner for Men’s Prisons Dave Pattinson. Officials have not released the identities of those charged, but court documents seen by local media suggest some staff allegedly accepted bribes to smuggle unauthorised items into prison.
According to reports from RNZ and Stuff, some defendants are accused of conspiring to supply methamphetamine and cannabis to prisoners. Allegations also include smuggling cellphones and attempts to destroy evidence by deleting material from mobile phones after the investigation intensified.
Police operation exposes deeper prison concerns
Authorities have confirmed the case is tied to a broader Auckland police operation, although investigators are still withholding many details because of active court proceedings.
Corrections Minister Mark Mitchell said gangs and organised crime groups often try to infiltrate the prison system by targeting vulnerable staff and attempting to move contraband inside correctional facilities.
“They try to get contraband and information into our prisons,” Mitchell said while defending the close cooperation between Police and Corrections during the investigation.
Deputy Commissioner Dave Pattinson said prisoners regularly use manipulation tactics in efforts to continue criminal offending from behind bars. He warned that both prisoners and staff involved in illegal behaviour would be held accountable.
The Department of Corrections also confirmed it is now reviewing the employment status of the arrested staff members while investigations continue.

Pressure grows on prison management and security
The scandal has reignited concerns about security vulnerabilities inside New Zealand prisons, especially around contraband trafficking and gang influence. Mt Eden prison has already faced repeated criticism in recent years over violence, inmate safety and operational oversight.
Swikblog recently covered another major controversy linked to the facility in Third Inmate Death in a Year: Mt Eden Faces Fresh Homicide Inquiry.
Serco, the private company operating Auckland South Corrections Facility, said it has “zero tolerance” for criminal conduct and confirmed it fully cooperated with police throughout the investigation.
While the full scope of the alleged offending remains unclear, the arrests have already triggered fresh debate across New Zealand about prison integrity, staff corruption risks and the growing challenge of organised crime networks operating beyond prison walls.
